From Trinidad to Valle de los Ingenios?

Hello,

We are planning to visit Valle de los Ingenios as a trip from Trinidad. We will be there without our own car.

Does anybody have some good advice how to visit this place?

We prefer to go on our own and not with a tourist tour. Furthermore, the guide book mentions some train, but apparently it is unreliable.
I suppose hiring a cab is possible, but would that be expensive?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Neelke and Philip (the Netherlands)

You can book a tour at any of the tourist desks in Trinidad. Some of them have you taking the train, others use buses.

Another option is to find a couple of other travellers and split the cost of a taxi.

Cheers,

When we were there the tourist (steam) train went out from Trinidad earlyish in the morning and returned towards midday. Nash Travel says 9.30 am and 2 pm. http://www.netssa.com/Trinidad_train.html Not sure when the diesel railcar runs.

I can't imagine a taxi would be expensive.

Such train is on and off all the time especially after the damages during the last rainy season. For the most intrepid it is a nice cycling route; and I would stop firstly at the View Point and a couple of spot before getting into Manaca-Iznaga.

Extremely easy to arrange once there. We paid around 30CUC for a solid day in a government taxi. You could be asked up to 80 which is not much for 2 let alone as Terry suggests for say 4.
Recent reports are that the train service is spasmodic.
