Is Ruta 44 on Puna de Atacama really existing?Planing my cycle oute acros the Puna de Atacama and come by this road on the Puna. According to my maps there are a small dirt road going nort just east of Paso San Fransisco. It goes to and countinues beyound two settlements, Las Quinuas and Mina la Casualidad. and the join with another road leading to Paso Socompa.
The southern part is called Ruta 44 and the part north of Mina la Casualidad is called ruta 27.
A friend of mine have done lots of cycling and climbing on the Puna, and he was even looking for this road but didnt find it. I cant find information on internet and there are no trails on google maps. (cant use GE right now..)
Do anyone here know anything?

1I looked for in Google Earth, it is possible such road exists, but not sure, in some parts it is impossible to find it. Easy to see it from Paso de S Francisco road up to El Peinado and near Casualidad. It seems to be very difficult to find water, and it must be almost impossible to find help, from El Peinado to Casualidad.
I know well the road from El Eje to El Penon, Antofagasta de la Sierra, Salar del Hombre Muerto and Cauchari, on the road to Paso Sico, I did it in 1992 and in 2009. I was told this road was recently closed from Antofagasta to Salar de Cauchari or to Salar del Hombre Muerto by a mining company.

2Hey there. I too am planning my route for next year. HERE is the route I believe you are referring to. I have been able to trace the portion of the route from San Francisco Pass to Las Quinuas via Google Maps and Google Earth however I am still trying to route out Las Quinuas to Mina la Casualidad. Please e-mail me at Agraham @ mines, edu if you would like to further discuss.

I realized that you're Lars from Sweden! I contact Harriet and Neil from Andesbybike.com yesterday regarding this same situation and they said you were inquiring also. I've been trying to find an e-mail address for you to no avail. Regardless, I just found a rather reliable looking route from Antofalla (just north of Las Quinuas) to Mina La Casualidad. It was should on Google Maps and I have confirmed the route via Google Earth. E-mail me for details

5Sorry for late answer from my side.
Not sure that road is interresting for me any more - if I go to the area I will probably stick to the main road and do some climbing instead. Just come down from Pircas Negras road and climbed Bonete Chico on the way.
But I would love to read about other cyclist on that road, so if anyone got any more, please link or PM me.
