Is anybody familiar with the train from santiago to puerto monttin early february
trying to decide between rental car and train
is it easy to make a stop on the train and get back on the next day
any advice for stops
im planning to get on navimag for a boat ride to hiking

There is no train from Santiago to Puerto Montt.It goes only as far as Chillan.
Busses are best.
Or if you love trains change at Chillan to break the journey.
One way car rentals are very expensive.

I agree. Busses are best.I think there may be a rail in the north. Mostly a tourist attraction.
I've also been looking at car rentals and the best deal I've come across is $300 a week for a compact, pickup and drop off in Santiago. Just search it on kayak. I was thinking of taking that little Renault into the Atacama and adventuring every bit of the desert for a week.
