So the original name of Flushing Meadows in NY where the tennis championships are held was Vlissingen something?

Harlem, Flushing, Wallstreet, Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn, the Bronx, New York is full of Dutch names dating back to New Amsterdam.
Flushing (meadows) is one of them

Oops! Not Überdingen, but Überlingen, aptly enclosed by the villages of Hödingen, Tüfingen and Uhldingen.

Some more education: in the past you could also jump on the ferry to the UK in Flushing, the line Flushing-Sheerness.

Hi,

Arizona, Flushing – Sheernes with the Olau Line, that’s already a long time ago, good old days. The Fast Ferry between Breskens (localy better known as Bresjes) and Flushing, even it’s just for pedestrains and cyclists is an important commuter link and will only be taken out of service during heavy storm and I think extreme foggy weather. From the ferry port in Breskens there is a direct bus connection to Bruges as I assume being your next destination. The Belgian company De Lijn (white buses with yellow and black logo) and Dutch company Veolia (white buses with blue and red logo) provide this service. Buses stopping any way at the main railway station in Bruges, being close to the city centre. Best is to use the ferry, using public transport through the Westerscheldetunnel will be a more time consuming affair if you will go to Bruges.

MTL, I think there is no translation of my region Zeeland, aptly meaning sea and land, into the English language. But for instance New Zealand is indeed named after it, James Cook seemed to anglicised the original name.

Almondy if you go by train or bus to Vlissingen/Flushing you will also pass through Middelburg and with the unique event there is snow now, hop off and spend a few hours in the old city centre if there is anough time. The gothic town hall, the old abbey, old harbour and the area around the Oostkerk, really nice.

Have a lot of fun,

Thanks all, already done the trip and proves a more interesting and less expensive way to go from Holland to Brugges. The ferry was fine, couldn't imagine it not running now as the inlet it crosses it quite well protected. There was an option for checking in with a chip kaart but not checking out in Breskens, so i just got a paper ticket.

Total cost w/o discounts: 19e IC train Rotterdam - Vlissengen, 2.85e fast ferry Vlissengen/Flushing - Breskens and 5.50e bus Breskens - Brugges, with a change from a Dutch to Belgian bus near the border. Going Rotterdam - Roosendaal - Antwerp - Ghent - Brugges on the train would cost about 35e, although the bus ride from Breskens is slow, so maybe the time difference is not much. Didnt get off to see Middelburg, but will next time, heard nice things about it.

that's an interesting alternative indeed to get from Amsterdam etc to Bruges, which is a popular route here. Good idea. Glad it went well.

Don't think any other tourists know about it, or you have to do is look at a map! If you are a Dutch resident and have a 40% discount on the NS trains, then getting to Bruges would cost under 20euros from Rotterdam, or well under 30euros from Amsterdam. All the other tourists i met in Brigges were going to Brussels to get a high-speed train to Ams, which puts the costs at over 50euros.

Good to be interactive, almondy.

Previous threads about this trip still in the diaspora but in short:
Then and when traintickets in shopping chains as Kruidvat and Blokker. The latter right now offer a dayticket € 14,-
At this very moment be also prepared for huge delays with Thalyss Brussels - Amsterdam due to many technical problems with another hispeed train, the Fyra that - though being banned from the schedule, also causes problems when be tested (yesterday, Sunday 3 hours delay!)

indeed thanks for this unusual yet very appealing suggestion!

@arie, what do you mean by 'banned from the schedule'?

Hi Nautiker, for the time being no more Fyra.
Temporarily there will be extra Intercities Antwerpen - Roosendaal. The Roosendaal - Amsterdam leg has not yet got a substitute (due to the heavily occupied rails)
Though in Dutch: the Fyra-drama
