DENVER TO SHANGHAI
March 29th to April 9th
Saturday = Depart at 8:30am. Arrive at 5:30pm - take train to city and just chill out. Stay up till night time and sleep like crazy to avoid jet lag. Get up at normal time next day.
Sunday = huge hotel brunch (the bridge between cultures and introduction to his city, friends, food, culture) - see nightlife in city and try out some local clubs, bars, hotspots with our four friends who live out there.
Monday = Sightsee around shanghai (bund, french concession, jade temple, nanjing road). Maybe take in an acrobat show at night if we are not too tired!
Tuesday = Leave early to Beijing on high speed train. Arrive that afternoon and meet up with friends and just relax.
Wednesday = Sightseeing (great wall, forbidden temple). Nice relaxing evening (or partying like his friends like to do - ha ha).
Thursday = Sightseeing BUT not sure what - anyone have some good ideas? Could we see the terracotta warriors in a day?
Friday = Leave in afternoon for Shanghai on train. Get back in evening and just relax with nice dinner on the town.
Saturday = UNKNOWN -- my friend has set up a huge concert with his band and several others for us to go to at night. We need some fun ideas for daytime stuff to do around or near city since we have to be back by about 5pm for concert and dinner. Any ideas of fun quick daytime adventure?
Sunday = Probably waste a day being hungover, eating food, and hanging around the neighborhood (he lives in french concession)
Monday = Day trip to canal towns outside city. Back at night for last dinner in china. (is this doable? which canal town is best?)
Tuesday = Leave for airport around 10am to leave for denver at 1pm on China Eastern Airlines. Say goodbye!
P.S. We would really like to do Huangshan Mtn, West Lake, Suzhou gardens, etc -- not sure which of those could be squeezed into one of our days or how long they take?

1Wednesday = You could see the Forbidden City and maybe Temple of Heaven
Thursday = You could see the Great Wall, and some of the Summer Palace.
Terracotta warriors are in Xi'an, about 1100 km from Beijing.
Huangshan - unlikely on your schedule.
West Lake - you could catch a fast train to Hangzhou from Shanghai, likewise Suzhou. You could head to Suzhou on Sunday, and stay in Tongli that night. Return to Shanghai on Monday.

3Beijing deserves more times as the capital offers also interesting activities like the summer palace, peral/silk markets, hutongs, parks besides the icon wall and forbidden city. The main sights usually takes at least 3 full days.
You can consider to begin the Beijing tour on the third day(Monday) and move this day's Shanghai sightseeing to the 7th day(Saturday) before your friend's concert since your listed acitivites can easily be done in a big half of day.
The flight of Beijing and Shanghai can be available at good discount in March and April and sometimes will be approm equals or even cheaper than train. You can also consider to combine the flight if the fare is cheap. elong, ctrip, travelzen website are good sources to find cheap deals.
