First of all Cara, I know that you are new here, but please limit an inquiry like this to the Argentina section, you will get a better response, and others can access the same info easier.'Actually, you can book online from abroad with various webagent sites such as plataforma10 and omnilineas. You can also go to the various company webites and do it, like CATA, Andesmar (their site is called ticketsonline). They will send an eticket for you to printout, so only do this if you can access the net with a printer beforehand.
I think your problem is that you cannot buy until at least the month before. Try starting from the 15th of March, there is no rush.
As #1 indicates, usually there is no problems buying on the ground at the bus stations, preferably a few days before. Usually the buses are not full, except for busy times.

Don't bother to book online long in advance. It's is MUCH more effective to go some bus travel agency which exists in every town or city. They have access to ALL bus lines AND you can pay in CASH (which will save you 30+ percent if you change 'clever').I used an booking office on the lower floor of Alto Palermo shopping mall, but there are dozens others. Retiro bus station is a bit tricky as you have to go to the individual bus companies (while the agent can offer all different options).

That is not quite true. Many agent offices in Argentina only offer some of the bus lines. Often, there are exclusive contracts (Andesmar bad for this) where only certain buslines or a busline conglomerate may be sold. This is especially important where only certain
buslines serve certain destinations.
But, yes, it is better to go to a neighborhood agent rather than making a special trip to the bus terminal. The offices/stores will have the names of the bus lines they represent plastered somewhere on the outside of the office.
