Possible trip in May to Peru, Colombia, or back to Central America
I have been living and traveling through Mexico and Central America for the past few years. I am now back in the US. I am an advanced Open Water Diver, but diving isn't a must for my next trip.I planned to go back to Nicaragua and visit the Corn Islands leaving from San Jose, CR again but I'm thinking of trying out Peru. my possible beginning destinations are Iquitos, Cusco, or Lima. Of course i'd travel all around the areas during my 3 1/2 weeks. If cusco i'd of course visit the Ruins, Machu Pichu and possibly travel to lake Titicaca and check out Bolivia, In Iquitos i'd like to travel up the Amazon and maybe try a ayuhuasca journey through a shaman and visit leticia Colombia. If traveling to Lima I don't know what to do but head towards the Ocean and try diving.
I'll be travelling on a budget so any ideas would be helpful along with places to visit.
If anyone knows Bogota, Colombia and thinks that would be a better choice for my first South America visit all input would help. Or any other destinations cheap to get to from the San Francisco bay area. I'm open to cheap multi-city itineraries. Last trip I entered San Pedro Sula, HN and left from San Jose, CR. So any options between 500-800$ are open to consideration.
Thanks
Mike

For a first trip to South America, I think the Cusco option is probably the best. You have a lot of different places in Peru and Bolivia you can visit in that 3 to 4 week period.Colombia would be my second choice, Arrive in Bogota, do some short trekking at Salento near Armenia, Also stop in Manizales, visit the nearby National Park head down to Medellin and then back to Bogota. There are plenty of other places in between, or a little further to fill in the rest of your itinerary.

thanks, i'm leaning towards cuzco but due to the high price of getting a visa to Bolivia for US citizens I'll probably travel to Northern Chile around Arica and try some diving. Columbia would be much cheaper flightwise but I can't see all that much interest for me there.I realy would like to see the Amazon area of Iquitos. I still have time to read up.

I finally made my decision and bought a ticket. I decided against Peru and I'm heading to Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. I here the diving is great in the Gulf of Thailand. Just thought i'd post my final choice. I hope to make South America another time.
