we will cross the border between Laos and Vietnam by bicycle. So we need to get our visa beforehand at the embassy...
Can anybody tell us:
how much does the visa cost in Bangkok / Luang Prabang?
what is the processing time for a visa?
is it easy to do it by yourself?
Bot embassy's websites don't give up to date information?

3My friend got it last year in Bangkok I believe for around $50. It won't be much more than that. So definitely cheaper in Asia than at home. Here's a report from a couple of people that it's 1500 baht in Bangkok and takes 1 day (so $50). http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g293916-i3687-k5580590-Applying_for_Vietnam_Visa_in_Bangkok-Bangkok.html

4And here's info from March 2012. Single entry is 1,000 baht, so around $33. http://govietnamvisa.com/blog/how-to-get-a-vietnam-visa-in-bangkok/

7If you're going to need all the 30 days in Vietnam then you would be better leaving it untilt he country you'll be in before entering and you have some idea of date of entry.

8Looks like in December the fee in Bangkok already went up to 2400 baht. http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293916-i3687-k5948976-Current_fee_for_Vietnamese_Visa_in_Bangkok-Bangkok.html

11westwood is correct, you can enter Vietnam on or after the "valid from" date on your visa, but not before. Your visa will expire on the "valid until" date, not 30 days after you actually entered.
Another option is the Vietnam Consulate in Khon Kaen, Thailand. They usually have faster/cheaper service than BKK, in fact many travel agents in BKK process visas in Khon Kaen!

13If you're arriving overland you can not use the online pre-approval letter process, it's for AIR arrivals only. But, it's $10USD processing fee, plus $45USD stamping fee if you are flying, from http://www.vietnamvisapros.com
From the consulate in LP it "should" be $65 total cost paid at the consulate when you apply. That is unless they have used the worldwide visa fee increase as an excuse to increase "local" fees. In that case probably $70USD.
The process is easy, fill out application, pay fee, hand over visa photo, get receipt, and come back to pick-up visa in 2-3 days.

14Where are you from? There are a few countries the get a 15 day "visa waiver" for Vietnam. Do a Google search for a list of countries that qualify.
