It is outside of the city, so you probably need a bike or taxi to take you to/from the city. However, you are rewarded by being in the middle of the karst and village life. Rice paddies and the li river are right at your doorstep.
Regarding activities, bicycling to Moon Hill and other locations is very popular. Many visitors go rafting or do other boat trips on the rivers. It's hard to know what to recommend without knowing your interests. It'd be a good idea to look in a guidebook and do some internet research, then ask specific questions.
Magnolia 3*, Ceek View Hotel 3*, Green Lotus Hotel 5* in the town and Moondance Resort 4*, Li River Retreat in the countryside are nice staying options.
Bike around the countryside, Yulong rafting, Hiking between Yangdi and Xingping, learning classes like cooking,Taichi, are popular actitivies.
Outside, the Moondance River Resort is just amazing. Book well in advance.
We also really lied the Yangshuo Mountain Retreat. Bear in mind these 2 are out of Yangshuo - lovely if yu just want to chill, but about 7km if you wanted to go to the bars & retaurants of Yangshun in the evening.
1)take a bus to the dock of Yangdi from Yangshuo, 40km/1.5hr,
2)charter a bamboo raft sail to 9-horses painting Hill(12km) ,a dock in the midway, keep the tickets for ferry,
3)hike along the river to Xingping town, 6km,
4)bus back to Yangshuo,24km/1hr

Oops! Sorry, I missed your headline. There are literally hundreds of hotels in Yangshuo. What price range would you prefer? Is a quiet location important to you? Do you want a dorm bed in a youth hostel or a hotel room? We've stayed a couple of times at the Yangshuo Rosewood Inn because it's right in the centre of Yangshuo, but one bock back from West St. & you're not bothered by the noise. For about 550Y (at the time) we had a small but very nice, clean room with a HUGE terrace, & the oethers were in a large room, same floor, small terrace. We wanted to be in town.Outside, the Moondance River Resort is just amazing. Book well in advance.
