1There were a lot of posts on how bleached the reefs are at Pulau Weh from last year. If the archive was
available you could read up on it. In particular, I recall one traveller who went with his GF to Pulau Weh and
expressed extreme disappointment in the diving conditions. Opposing viewpoints seemed to come from locals
who had an economic interest in promoting tourism to the area. Bunaken, off north Sulawesi, was superb
when I was there last year.

I dove with with Rubiah Tirta Divers there in August 2010, and my son did his Rescue Diver during our stay. Yudi and his team did a marvellous job, but viz wasn't really good, and we had just come from Alor, where it was excellent. The impairment of visibility is in part due to rain, and it does rain quite a bit all the year round.

4I went diving with Rubiah Tirta Divers in May 2013 and was very happy with them. For one thing I appreciate that they are a local dive operator. Besides, they always sent one guide with just two divers, something I had never experienced before, so that the diving is very individual (air, depth) and never too busy.
It is correct that the coral bleech has taken it's toll, especially on the shallower reefs. It get's better when you go a little deeper. The reef fish populations seem very healthy however, and there's a great variety of species. I only did five dives but also saw a couple of turtles and black tip reef sharks, so there's a fairly good chance of spotting these, too.
As for the currents, sometimes they get a bit strong and sometimes there are none (also differing from dive site to dive site, of course). If you're not comfortable with diving in a current, just let the guides know and they should find a solution (change dive route or dive spot).
I'd say that the amount to which people enjoy the diving there depends mostly on what they're used to and what they've seen already, as with any diving.
