Need inputs on Travel in Greece - Itinerary and means of TravelDear All
i am travelling to Greece between Feb 2 and 17. Understand its off season, but these are the dates i could get off work.
The following is my travel schedule
Athens : 3 days
Hydra : Daytrip from Athens
Delphi, Meteora : 4 days (including travel)
Mycenae, Epidauras, Nafplio, Corinth : 2 days
Sparta, Olympia, Mystras : 3 days
Mani : 3 days
Is there any optimization possible on the above schedule ?
Is public bus travel recommended ? Or would you recommend i join a tour ? Or is a Private taxi service recommended at certain legs like Peloppenese ?
Would await your recommendations and thoughts.

1It may be cold at Meteora.
Athens - Kalambaka/Meteora - Delphi (you may need to change buses along this leg) - Nafpaktos - Patras - Olympia - Kalamata - Mani - Gythion - Sparta/Mistras - Mycenae/Epidauras/Nafplio - Corinth?
All feasible by bus, but you must know where you want to stop and what you want to see in Mani

I will only comment on the places in your itinerary I know best.
Athens 3 days - fine, and public transport there, especially the metro, is great. Most sights are even in walking distance.
Hydra: Will be more or less deserted in early February, but for just a day trip that may not matter to you. Instead of Hydra, maybe take a half day tour to Sounion in one of your 3 Athens days?
Mycenae, Epidauras, Nafplio, Corinth : 2 days
This is not enough time, except if you rent a car, and I guess that's out of the question. I'm sure you have a good reason to use 3 days in Mani and 2 in the North-Eastern Peloponnese, but I can't understand what that reason is ;-)
Don't know if you checked this page, but maybe it will be of some use when you plan this part of your trip: http://www.visitnafplio.com

4Hello again Rajiv!
This needs careful planning and includes long traveling distances, but I think it might be feasible.
There are many ways to do this, some ideas here:
Train Athens to Kalambaka/Meteora http://tickets.trainose.gr/dromologia/. Bus to Delphi (not direct route here,, multiple buses are needed). I think you need the one towards Lamia through Trikala of course, browse this site http://ktel-trikala.gr/?module=default&pages_id=16&lang=en and of course always double check relevant info on the spot.
Delphi to Patras bus http://www.ktel-fokidas.gr/?module=default&pages_id=32&lang=en Then Patras to Pyrgos= ΠΑΤΡΑ – ΠΥΡΓΟΣ . ΕΚΤΟΣ ΣΑΒΒΑΤΟΥ & ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗΣ=Except Saturday and Sunday. http://www.ktelileias.gr/Site/31-%CE%A0%CF%8D%CF%81%CE%B3%CE%BF%CF%82%20-%20%CE%A0%CE%AC%CF%84%CF%81%CE%B1#.UPfM9UeNwdE Local bus Pyrgos to Olympia= ΠΥΡΓΟΣ – ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ http://www.ktelileias.gr/Site/39-%CE%A0%CF%8D%CF%81%CE%B3%CE%BF%CF%82%20-%20%CE%9F%CE%BB%CF%8D%CE%BC%CF%80%CE%B9%CE%B1#.UPfNY0eNwdE ΔΕΥΤΕΡΑ έως ΠΑΡΑΣΚΕΥΗ=Monday to Friday ,ΣΑΒΒΑΤΟ=Saturday and ΚΥΡΙΑΚΗ & ΑΡΓΙΕΣ=Sunday & Bank Holidays.
I uess then you could head to Messinian Mani through Kalamata ΠΥΡΓΟΣ–ΚΑΛΑΜΑΤΑ=Pyrgos- Kalamata http://www.ktelileias.gr/Site/29-%CE%A0%CF%8D%CF%81%CE%B3%CE%BF%CF%82%20-%20%CE%9A%CE%B1%CE%BB%CE%B1%CE%BC%CE%AC%CF%84%CE%B1#.UPfN9EeNwdE
Then Kalamata to Sparti and Mystras http://www.ktelmessinias.gr/?module=default&pages_id=29&lang=en and then
embark bus Sparti to Athens,http://www.ktelmessinias.gr/?module=default&pages_id=24&lang=en disembarking on Isthmos . For Isthmos take passing bus to Nafplion http://www.ktel-argolidas.gr/?module=default&pages_id=9&lang=en
From Nafplion you can take bus to Athens dropping off on Isthos and taking local bus or more likely taxi to Corynth. Ancient Corynth is outside modern town so maybe a taxi Isthmos to the site is more handy. Ask driver to wait for you and then to drop you off Proastiakos/Suburban train stop. Train back to Athens http://tickets.trainose.gr/
There are many other alternatives but I tried to get distant destinations out of the way, saving areas near Athens towards the end of the trip and avoiding back tracking. I think there is plenty of traveling around involved though, maybe I would cut out Mani and/or Sparti area as they are the most distant and hard to get to (?) Not sure, it is your choice!

5Pelloponese and Metorea need a car or an organized tour. Forget about trying to use public transport, It's there but unreliable except in Athens and to get to Hydra. You'll want more than 2 days for Nafplio and Epidauros, Mycenae. At least 3 maybe 4. I know it might not be to your taste but the tours from Athens to Pelloponese, Delpohi and Metorea are a great time saver and relatively good value. Saves you all that driving also,..just a thought

There are timetables published in the web. Although their presentation is often a bit chaotic (we are in Greece!), they are a good base for planing. Just check again once you are in Greece.

would you know there is a bus early in the morning from Gythieo to Nafplio ?

10No direct bus as far as I know. You have to go on Tripoli, then get an other bus to Nafplion. There is a 7.30 departure (it is the bus departing Gythio for Athens) Από Γύθειο > Πρός Αθήνα http://ktel-lakonias.gr/?q=el/node/67 Then Tripoli to Nafplio http://www.ktel-argolidas.gr/?module=default&pages_id=13&lang=en Make sure you always ask details on the spot. I think it is about 3 hours Gythio to Tripoli then 1+ hour Tripoli to Nafplion, so not absolutely sure if you can connect straight away on Tripoli or wait for noon bus. ISomeone I met a few months ago told me that there are two bus station on Tripoli too. Make sure you are on the right one for the Nafplion departure. (I get the impression you will arrive from Gythio to the appropriate bus station, but better safe than sorry lol )
