Fireworks in Iceland

Hello everybody,

this summer during our holiday in Iceland, I am going to propose to my girlfriend.

For this reason I want to arrange a big firework display for her.

As I won't be able to do so myself - and certainly not take the firework stuff secretly with me in the plane - I could use some help finding a provider in advance.

I am thankful for any helpful comment.

Greets,
Marius

Contact Landsbjörg, the Icelandic Search and Rescue:
http://www.icesar.com/
They are the main organization responsible for selling fireworks since the proceeds go to supporting their organization. It's probably not legal for you to procure them as a private person in the off-season (meaning not for New Year's) but they might be able to arrange something for you.

Hi, you can also go to the nice lagoon Jokulsarlon on the 25th of August, there is a huge fireworks show with the sea on the left, the glacier on the right and the iceberg in front of you. It is just magic!

When are you going? You realise that from early May until about 10 or 15 August there isn't really sufficient darkness to be able to see fireworks - unless it is only noise you are interested in? They have a big firework display for the cultural festival in mid-August in Reykjavik which is about the first opportunity to be able to enjoy them after the white nights - but it happens at quite a late hour to get it dark enough, and it isn't completely dark by then, but it's dark enough.

@manaljos
Thanks for the advice and the link. I am certainly going to contact them and ask them, whether it is possible and whether it makes sense at all during Iceland's summer.

@iviehoff
I was sceptical about the idea myself, but yet I am neither convinced it will work, nor that it won't work. Are there some people in this forum who live in Iceland and can give me their opinion?

By the way, we will be there in early June.

By the way, we will be there in early June.
So, at midnight, it will to all intents and purposes be broad daylight, like the slight dimming a short time after sunset on a spring day somewhere further south. The locals can't tell you whether setting fireworks off in such conditions is worthwhile, beacuse they aren't allowed to buy them and set them off and see. They don't do public fireworks until late enough in August when you can say it does actually get dark.

If you are allowed to buy fireworks where you live, buy one and set it off shortly after sunset when the daylight is still mostly there, and decide whether setting fireworks off in such conditions is worth the bother. My guess is it isn't.

I've seen fireworks set off at the darkest part of the night during the solstice (a few weeks later than the OP's planned trip) and it was pretty unspectacular. I suggest spending the money on some other way of commemorating the moment.
