Which hotel location in Philadelphia? For a first-time visit to Philadelphia with my wife, I am considering either the Hotel Monaco or the Hotel Palomar. The former is at 433 Chestnut Street, right near Independence Hall. The latter is at 117 South 17th Street, right off Rittenhouse Square. Could someone with knowledge of the city suggest which of the two locations would be better for first-time visitors? The Rittenhouse location is slightly more expensive than the Independence location.
By way of background, we plan to do fairly touristy things in Philly -- see the historic sites, walk around historic streets and gardens, and enjoy good food and drink. We enjoy neighborhoods along the lines of Dupont Circle in DC, Nolita/SoHo in NYC, Marina/Cow Hollow/Russian Hill in SF, and Beacon Hill in Boston. From what I understand, Rittenhouse Square is similar to those areas; however, we don't want to be too far from the historic sites. (How long would it take to walk from one area to the other?)
Thanks for any suggestions.

2I have stayed at both hotels over the years, both areas are fine overall. I actually prefer the Rittenhouse Sq area as it just reminds me more of areas of NY and my hometown St Louis Central West End area. The are is also a vibrant, yet refined cafe, wine bar and cuisine scene too, with Rouge and Asia de Cuba a mainstay in the area last I was there (2008). The other area is closer to the river and some major tourist attractions/boats etc, that I never took the time to indulge as I was meetings all day usually and free in the evening. There is area also close by that has more of a downtown nightlife and a mix of both nice and also regular pubs and eateries and such. One area that is nice there for a stroll near Independence Hall is Society Hill. Overall Philly is pretty compact, taxis plentiful and the train network easy enough, even from the airport. Is especially enjoy the Museum there, of weather permits, nice bike ride up the Schuykill river to the cemeteries.
I love the Kimpton Boutique Hotels, i have stayed at them in Wash DC, NYC, San Fran and Chicago. its would take you maybe 15-20 minutes to walk between these two hotels. If you like antiques, old books and the sort, I think Rittenhouse Sq is up your alley, but will probably be fine.

3I am sorry I should of been more clear, I have stayed at these hotels in other cities, not in Philly. But, I have stayed right next to where both are as well. Also, according to Google Map on walking, is 1 miles between them is 30 minutes ish, so plan accordingly. No wonder my feet hurt,,,haha
Chestnst is a great street to walk....
