Travel from Santiago to Lisbon - Bus/Train/Plane
Hello - if the system was working correctly there would probably be answer to this question that I could search for. But as the system is not working, please help. After my camino I intend to go down to Lisbon. My suggested departure date in around 9 July. I had a look at the flights and the cheapest was via Madrid (no direct flights?!). Other forums suggest that the train is an overnight "nightmare" so the bus appears to be the go. Is there more than one bus company?; more than one bus per day? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Hey Mike,Where are you flying into? Plan on doing the Camino this year also and have not decided where to land.
Have been advised London; Paris; Amsterdam; Barcelona; Madrid --never thought of Lisbon.
Right now best deal for me is RT from NYC to Madrid for $316 but it is not good for the months I'm thinking of going.

As annemariet said in #1, Alsa has direct buses from Santiago to Lisbon.By plane, there are direct flights from La Coruña to Lisbon with TAP. You can easily reach La Coruña (aka A Coruña) from Santiago de Compostela either by bus or train. There are buses from downtown La Coruña to the airport (you can also take a taxi).
By train, the most direct route is changing trains in Redondela de Galicia and Porto. There's an option with a single change of trains but it's a big detour (you would need to change trains in Medina del Campo) and the time between trains is long.

Xinloi (#3) I am coming from Oz into Madrid so my airfares are a lot more than yours. From Madrid its a train to Granada for a week or 10 days in Moorish Spain (with possibly some short walks in between) and then start the Camino - Via de la Plata - from Merida. So am estimating walking 770 km in 6/7 weeks.Anne & Anillos - thanks for confirmation about the buses and trains. Trying to stay away from planes with 24+ hours each way from Oz.

Mike,We are starting in France.
Doing the walk because it negates all future sins.
For past sins, I have already bought 3 bars of "Wash Away your sins" soap---motto is--Cleans as it Redeems--don't think you can get it in Oz.
Directions on Soap Box:
Open Box
Engage water supply
Moisten oneself
Lather Vigoursly
Rinse
Repent

And if you look for buses at www.alsa.es, remember that Porto in Spanish is Oporto!10
Hey utrechtlocal (#8) that sound like a great idea. My Spanish still not up to scratch - so what times do the ALSA buses depart Santiago. Cheers.13
English version of the web of AlsaAs far as I remember, all the Alsa's buses going from Santiago de Compostela to Porto continue to Lisbon (i.e.: Porto is -only- a stop in the route to Lisbon) so the departure time from Santiago would be the same in both cases (but verify it in the web of Alsa).
Just in case it was necessary, this web of the Portuguese Railways (click in the UK flag at the top of the page to change it to English if you don't understand written Portuguese).
