China / Hong Kong ferries to Japan

Most of the archives are still missing from LP so I can't search on historical topics.

I want to travel from China to Japan overland (or oversea) i.e. NO FLIGHTS. I want to do this around May or June.
What are the locations in China that I can sail from using passenger ferries/sailboats/freights/anything that moves on water to Japan?

Is it possible from?
1. Hong Kong
2. Shanghai?
3. What other locations?

How much does it cost? What are the durations? Does anyone have any info, times/schedules or websites I can visit?

No ferries from Hong Kong to Japan. There are ferries from Shanghai to Osaka.

See http://www.seat61.com/China.htm#Ferries%20from%20China%20to%20Japan

You can also go from China to Taiwan (but the boat stops there). See http://www.seat61.com/Taiwan.htm#Ferries%20to%20Taiwan

And you could go from China to South Korea to Japan. http://www.seat61.com/SouthKorea.htm#.UO_XJKyOwto

Apart from Shanghai to Osaka/Kobe, there is Tianjin (Tanggu) to Kobe.

That is something like 48 hours.

And there is also Qingdao to Shimonoseki, which should be a little faster (haven't done that trip though).

I've done Shanghai to Kobe, Osaka to Shanghai and Shimonoseki to Qingdao, although it was about 5 years ago now. I don't know how much of this info is relevant now, but here is what I wrote up about the Shanghai - Kobe trip: http://www.shhdtm.com/abcs-of-backpacking/shanghai-kobe-ferry/
