Yumuri Valley Cuba

OK since this appears to be to default location for Cuba questions, has anyone found anything in the Yumuri Valley that should not be missed? We will be out near there and would love a lead or two......

Hi DM:

Yumuri Valley must be a hidden jem, as I don't see alot of info (or photos) on the places.

Here are a few links for you.

http://www.cubahotelbookings.com/en/search/districts/yumuri-valley/53

check out these photos, if this link works - dense forest, and I am sure a guide is needed, Jeep tours probably abound.

photos of Yumuri Valley

and one more link with lots of info on how to get there:

Hope this helps abit.

My favourite area is still Sierra Maestra near Marea del Portillo, jeep trips there, as well as by horseback.

good luck.

Thanks cubita, we will probably stick Yumuri this time because Sierra Maestra is a bit further afield!

The Yumuri Valley has a diameter of roughly 8 km, so it's not very big. It's surrounded by mountains about 400-500 feet high. If you're on the main highway from Varadero/Matanzas to Havana, you'll cross the Bacunayagua Bridge one of the most relevant engineering works in the country. It's a picturesque spot to watch the vultures soar down in gorge and there's a snack bar up at the top. Mind you, it's a VERY touristy trap because every single tourist bus from Varadero to Havana stops there so the tourists can get photos and junk.

Thanks Steve- we will completely by-pass the bridge and hope to drop into the valley itself to visit with some of the local farmers, as farmers ourselves we like to see how the other half lives and maybe drop off some seed varieties they might not be able to get.....

dm, just for your info, if you ever get to Granma Province, the small town of Marea del Portillo, there are farms in the town of Mota, and I have a good friend there, her and her husband have a wonderful farm, they alternate crops, from bananas, to cebollos, to grapes, etc.

You can contact me through email if you like.

Thanks cubita, if we are evr out that way we will be in touch! In the mean time, we have good friends who farm in Ciego with whom we spend much of our time, they also farm with the old system: oxen, machetes, hard farm cheeses, we could learn from them in the US!
