Amalfi Coast- tour vs on our own?
Taking my mom to Italy and want to finish with a few days in the south. Want to see Sorrento, Capri, Positano and Amalfi. I will have 2 or 3 nights, coming from Rome. Was looking at tours, but only found ones that included some of those places. Does anyone know any tours? I found viator tours only but they didn't hit both Capri and Amalfi. Or is it easy enough to stay some place like Sorrento, and do mini day trips? Would like to end our trip with a nice few days in nicer range hotels ($150-$200) after roughing it the rest of the trip. can we do it on our own in that amount of time or are we better to take a tour that is organized. Just looking for ideas from people who have been there and can recommend anything?2
No need at all to take a tour..it is easy and much cheaper to do alone.Sorrent is an ok base..lots of hotels, restaurants etc..and easy to get to those places by public transport (train/bus).
Boat for Capri of course ;-)
What time of year are you planning this? Not much point going to Capri in January for example.......

I did exactly that last October. We stayed at the Il Faro in Sorrento. It's a small old place, but nice. The bus stop and ferry docks are just a few steps away.It is downhill from from the main town,so you can walk up the longer winding road, or take a short cut up a set of stairs. It's a good workout.
We took the bus with a day pass all along the Amalfi coast, stopped in Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi. Bus day pass = 7.20 euro each.
Walk up to the Museo della Carta in Amalfi to see oldstyle papermaking, 4.00 euro each
We took the ferry to Capri, and the chairlift to the top of the mountain. Ferry tickets = 30 euro each.
We took the train to Pompeii. Train tickets = 11.00 euro each.
Walking around old Sorrento itself is a good day's walk.

Sorrento is a good base. From Sorrento to Positano it's a one hour drive with a public bus.
From Positano it's cheap to go by boat to Amalfi, otherwise another hour to drive by bus.
Please note the last departure times to return.
For Capri it's nice to make a full day trip around the island with a boat which droppes you off at the interesting places.
From Capri-city take the local bus to Anacapri and there take the chairlift up, you will be astonished at the views up from there.
