Majorca

Hi. Am thinking about a trip to Majorca in July/August this year but I've heard mixed reviews including that the place is a bit dirty and that I should go at a quieter time of year. Can anyone comment?

Everywhere can be a bit dirty in places. I've been to Mallorca in peak season and don't remember it being over dirty at all.

What area(s) of Mallorca do you plan to visit?

I have spent 2,5 weeks on Mallorca past june/july, however i must admit that i've never set foot in any of the major tourist ghettos. We have done trips to most corners of the island but were based in a village in the interior, closest to the south-east coast.
I wouldn't call it dirty. The beaches were relatively crowded to my standards, i agree with that.

I would say that it all depends on what you want to do there, and where you will be staying. To give you an idea, we've stayed in a house in the countryside with no other people in sight. We could shower naked in the garden, only surrounded by many rabbits and birds.
It's a beautiful island, with several faces.

Majorca is a lovely island and Palma (the capital) is one of the classiest cities in Spain. As mickyfinn says I'm sure you'll find "dirty" places pretty much everywhere in the world, so I guess it depends on what dirty means to you..

It is true, however, that Majorca will be busy over the high season (July/August), particularly if you are looking for accommodation in a resort near the usual tourist spots. My advice would be to rent a car and explore the Northern and Western parts of the island, away from the bigger crowds.

Whatever you do, don't miss a trip on the Palma-Soller train. A wonderful 'day-out'.

Nice mention about the train. More olive trees that I've ever seen anywhere and apparently some of them are over 600 years old (so I was told). A lovely trip on one of the world's loveliest narrow guage railways.

There are lots of lovely areas on Mallorca. Like the rest of Spain everywhere I have visited on the island seems very clean - although there are probably 'dirty' places somewhere. My personal faves are Pollenca and Soller. I recently had a great holiday near Campanet, at a hotel called monnaber nou, although you will need a car if you stay outwith the main towns.

Have a great time.

Thanks everyone for your comments - I am feeling inspired! I will definately go but might rethink the time of year I travel. It also sounds like I should allow plenty of time, and hire a car, so I can get a good in-depth experience.
