I have spent 2,5 weeks on Mallorca past june/july, however i must admit that i've never set foot in any of the major tourist ghettos. We have done trips to most corners of the island but were based in a village in the interior, closest to the south-east coast.I wouldn't call it dirty. The beaches were relatively crowded to my standards, i agree with that.
I would say that it all depends on what you want to do there, and where you will be staying. To give you an idea, we've stayed in a house in the countryside with no other people in sight. We could shower naked in the garden, only surrounded by many rabbits and birds.
It's a beautiful island, with several faces.

Majorca is a lovely island and Palma (the capital) is one of the classiest cities in Spain. As mickyfinn says I'm sure you'll find "dirty" places pretty much everywhere in the world, so I guess it depends on what dirty means to you..
It is true, however, that Majorca will be busy over the high season (July/August), particularly if you are looking for accommodation in a resort near the usual tourist spots. My advice would be to rent a car and explore the Northern and Western parts of the island, away from the bigger crowds.

Whatever you do, don't miss a trip on the Palma-Soller train. A wonderful 'day-out'.Soller train, Palma de Majorca

There are lots of lovely areas on Mallorca. Like the rest of Spain everywhere I have visited on the island seems very clean - although there are probably 'dirty' places somewhere. My personal faves are Pollenca and Soller. I recently had a great holiday near Campanet, at a hotel called monnaber nou, although you will need a car if you stay outwith the main towns.Have a great time.
