Because they have given you a smart phone worth up to £400 as long as you take a contract.

They're hardly going to unlock it so you can dodge their roaming charges which are one way they get their money back. Best thing in future is to register your SIM online so you can top it up remotely.

ray, i don't do smart (i refuse to have a phone that can outthink me) and i don't do contract.

but when travelling internationally, there's no way i'm going to pay roaming. also, if you're trying to get locals to call you (booking offices, hotels, etc), they're more likely to do so if you have a local number.

Well then, you can buy an unlocked, unSmart phone for less than £20 at Carphone Warehouse, as I just did. Pas de problem.
