I know a great one in Cahuita if you fancy that..its just down the road and is IMHO a much more chilled,laid-back place in general than PV.

The name is 'Cabinas Nirvana'.

It has a nice range of private rooms, including with kitchen etc. Also a pool.

Its not the cheapest option but is very fairly priced for what you get.Great owners and just down the road from a nice reggae bar and the beach......

Playa Cahuita is great little afro caribe funky ramshackle town with great afro caribe spicy cuisine and also a good folk music scene, with a great National Park just south of town, hike and snorkel.

In Pt Viejo, I suggest staying just south of town, in Playa Cocles, but the main epicenter of all backpackers to get your bearings is Rocking J's.

I spend a lot of time in the Puerto Viejo area and there are quite a few places in and around the town where you should be able to find a room with no problem at the spur of the moment.

If you want a bit more privacy and a low-key atmosphere I highly recommend the Hidden Jungle Beach House in Playa Negra, just before you get to Puerto Viejo, a Caribbean-style house with four second-floor bedrooms which are rented per night or monthly, by Lisa, the owner, an expat from the United States of America. Three of the rooms have double beds and one has a single bed and the rates are $25 per night for one person and $35 for two.

There's a communal kitchen downstairs, from which the inside hot shower and a toilet are accessed, and a powder room upstairs, with a toilet and small sink.

The place is protected by two nice, big friendly dogs, and one small cat.

There are sitting areas outside, on an upstairs landing and on the first floor. Bicycles are available for rental and Lisa, the proprietress, is a veritable goldmine of information on the area and is happy to share her knowledge.
