Driving the Queensland Coast - Which Month to Choose

Hi All

Me and my girlfriend are planning a 2 week driving trip from Airley Beach to PD with stops at several beach places along the way. I am undecided on which time of year to make this trip. Obviously we want to avoid monsoon season and maximise our chances of blue skies, but we also want to be able to sit outside in our shorts in the evenings and enjoy eating and drinking in a warm, balmy climate. We live in Brisbane so I know how chilly the evenings get from june to august, and we want to try to avoid this.

Our options are mid April or the start of June. May is out of the question due to prior engagements. Waiting until spring is also an option, but it seems such a long time away!

Any recommendations welcome.

I'd say June. Winter in the north is warm, relatively dry and minimal chance of cyclones etc.

In April you may get the tail end of the wet season, which can make travel difficult in the far north.

April might be a good option as it should still be warm. Mind you there will still be box Jellyfish in the water so you still can't go swimming that time of year.

Most months are warm although one year I went to Cairns in September/October and even then it was freezing. I had to wear a jumper.

Thanks gypsygirl.

How about June vs the spring climate, say Aug/Sept?

August/September would probably be best of the three. Warmer than June, and no stingers.

You have to make sure it's a good quality one, but you can get stinger suits so that you can still swim during stinger season. I have heard they don't 100% block the stings but I didn't have any problems swimming all day. Also, I went there in November and the weather was absolutely lovely. I love hot weather and to be honest, it wasn't quite hot enough for me. Was about 30-32 most days and blue skies the whole time. Perhaps this is not typical though?
