I re-iterate that the sensible and reasonable solution (if any were actually required) from the start would have been to make the TT archive and PM's "read only" and give a 30 day grace period to copy any content you require. I would really like an answer as to why that couldn't have been done. I won't get one, probably because nobody thought of it as they ran around shouting "the sky is falling!...the sky is falling!!"1233
Come on... is this really a problem? If it's abusive, flag it. The mods will take it downYes, it's a problem. The mods should take it down but they don't always make it. Sometimes they make it, other times they don't make it. It seems to be quite random. Why? Who knows but it's not the first time insults towards an user (to put a clear, IMO not debatable, example) have been posted more than 24 hours and have been necessary several reports and several users openly supporting with their posts the insulted user before the insults were removed.
Let's see if we get an answer from them.

The mods should take it down but they don't always make it. Sometimes they make it, other times they don't make it.They don't make it what? In time to stop the tears from flowing? Come on... unless a post involves someone's home address or a threat against them, who really cares if someone freaks out or tells someone else that they're a rotten tourist or a big banana face etc.? I just had an experience where I – probably not very politely – doubted someone's advice on an Asia branch, and they proceeded to make a new account and follow me from post to post, calling me insufferable and annoying (touche). Was it pathetic? Of course, but did it really bother me that they weren't immediately identified and expelled for trolling? Nah... just laughed it off.
I guess the point is that everyone has a different idea of abusive. The other day in the S.A. post someone was ringing all the mod's bells to come and clean up a post. The offense? Someone was disagreeing with them, and this user thought it was against the community guidelines to do so.
I'm just one person but I'd love to see moderation settle down to the point where it's only visible where it's truly needed, and energy be placed on availability and breadth of info and ability to communicate between travelers, which I just think is more important than making sure somebody doesn't call someone else a big stupid face.

RE# BOOMER -1QUOTE- "required) from the start would have been to make the TT archive and PM's "read only" and give a 30 day grace period to copy any content you require"
Why should they be read only ? and why should they be closed after 30 days ?, what was wrong with them ? . There is still alot of useful material on the archive so why shouldn't anyone be able to reply to it ? , and what about all the wasted time and effort from those who thought their posts would stay as long term reference. Bad material on the carchive as I said can be covered with a general disclaimer and warning.
As for the explanation that PMs have to be taken away because they are being used for non travel related purposes - that leaves one speechless.

No ! they can't always , some people use different public computers not the same home computer all the time and furthermore many posters use mobile devices which are not always easy to track.

#1238- you ignored my caveat that I don't believe any such action was required. Of course I don't. However, if it was some unstoppable force then it should have been done with regard and respect to those members that have built the archive. Reading on this thread reveals many people who have been at best inconvenienced and at worst genuinely hurt by their inability to access PM's and archived material. There is no excuse for that because they could have suspended the live facility whilst allowing access to existing material...1239
There should also be a 'naughty words list, shouldn't there?I mean, how can we be expected to guess that calling a pharmacy by its American name is going to have a whole post banned?
1242
Mods responded that they tried to post it but the post was banned by the system. If they wanted to, they could simply post it somewhere else, and give us the link to it. ;-)
The obviosly don't want to - it would defeat the very purpose of having a banned words list, as people could then simply use naugthy words already known not to be on that list.
BTW, now it seems I have also had one of my already approved and visible posts on this thread deleted later. It was about why "abusive" posters may not always get banned or their posts deleted even when they are reported.

Obviously your post was reported, and mods were just doing as you suggested :)
