I'm getting more optimistic about the archive and some features coming back... it was just mentioned that the 'edit' function (which I happen to use a lot) was coming back soon, and the company certainly knows that a searchable forum is part of its greatest asset.I think it's just a case of the responsible parties looking at a messload of threads and procrastinating getting themselves in gear but it's clearly time to start putting them back up, except those which contain horrible cussing. Especially that word they say in Britain which we don't allow on our teevees here in US because that one is just the worst!

enroutesligoI'm sorry that you appear to be upset by my comments - they appear to have struck a nerve with you for some reason. However, given that I did not mention the particular poster's name, I really fail to see how you can comment on whether or not this person is a "knowledgeable curmudgeon" or simply a rude, nasty little troll with little else to do than make sarcastic and unhelpful comments to people's questions.

1128, 1131, 33, etc:I'm not in France but I spent 10+years visiting every year (almost always in the south near the Pyrenees). I've read almost every guidebook (in English & French), follow the local newspapers online as well as blogs from the area.
I comment because I know of all the people I have come to know in the area, none of them would follow, let alone post on an English language travel website. If you come to a local tourist office they will almost bury you in brochures and newspapers and magazines. There are some people on TT WE who know the same areas and provide their knowledge and advice But I'm the one with the links and I do stay up to date. I love the area and want others to enjoy what it offers and I don't know that a local would have the same willingness to share that I and other like me have.
About hostels and backpacking hotels....I know the fantastic Green Tortoise in San Francisco (CA) limits itself to people from outside of California as they do not want to be used by people who can afford better lodging at the expense of travellers who can't. I used to stay there but I respect what they're doing. Also in SF there is a hostel that the person who stays there has to have a passport; funny thing, a US passport is acceptable also, so it doesn't really deserve its 'International' name.

If the archives are restored, I wonder if my Devastation thread will return. It had years of trip reports contained within.Alas, it also had a lot of off topic conversation, so my hopes aren't too high.
Ironically the thread was titled devastation because that was my reaction to a similar previous thread being cast out into the ether during one of the version migrations.
On reflection, the title may have been a tad over dramatic given the recent turn of events :-O

how whether or not this person is a "knowledgeable curmudgeon" or simply a rude, nasty little trollIt seems you made typo when you wrote "the same old faces" because it's right next to the "nasty little troll" key.
It sounds like someone in particular really got your goat, but think about it... staying upset enough to continue posting? What did these same old fa- I mean, that one little troll say? Something so epically scurrilous that it can never be forgotten?
Point is that there are the same "old faces" on pretty much every branch, and the same complaints from people who say they're too mean, too rude, too grouchy... it's just been my experience over the years here that the truly unpleasant ones tend to get banned and eventually disappear, while the ones with the underlying travel passion tend to stick around. One of the things I love most about this forum is its freewheeling nature and for those who are offended by it there are lots of other options. The loss of immense amounts of irreplaceable travel wisdom IMO dwarfs any worries about grumpy old expats who haven't had their morning coffee yet.
