India Train Help!!Hi,
My friend and I arrive in Delhi on 31st March 2013 and will have 3 months in India.
We have planned the following route:
Delhi to Agra
Agra to Jaipur
Jaipur to Jodhpur
Jodhpur to Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer to Udaipur (BUS)
Udaipur to Ranthambore (Madhopur)
Sawai Madhpour to Amritsar
Amritsar to Calcutta
Calcutta (Howrah) to Varanasi (Mughal Sarai)
Varanasi City to Mumbai CST (LOKMANYATILAK T)
Mumbai to Goa (Karmali)
Karmali to Madagon to Gokarna Road
Gokarna to Kerela
The issue we have is we don't yet know how long we spend in each place and therefore don't want to prebook any trains from the UK.
Will it be possible to book these all in India? Not on the day but say a week or two in advance when we have a better idea of how long we will spend in each place. I have read conflicting things with some saying must prebook all trains and others saying it isn't necessary.
Any tips will be much appreciated.

who can say ... Trains book up months in advance in India. If you don't want to prebook ... you'll be using, a)luck, b)Tikkal Quota's, and c)super flexibility in choosing what is available, and in what class.
Consider using some flights on the mega routes such as Amritstar - Calcutta, Varinassi to Mumbai, Mumbai to Goa.

2I agree with joe.
If you know where you want to go within a week or two you'll have no problems getting from place to place as long as you are flexible as to your type of transport (train, bus or flight), your class of service and the time you leave.
On some of those routes you'll be able to share a car ride as well. You'll meet folks along the way and adjust your itinerary a dozen times.
Relax, you'll be fine. Have a great trip.

3With the trains ideally we would want to go in the cheapest available class which I believe is sleeper class. We would happily get a bus as an alternative to train though and fly if budget allows.
Getting a train in the night etc is no problem for us so with a bit of luck you think we will be ok without pre-booking? Obviously if we have to stay somewhere a bit longer while we wait for a train it isn't the end of the world.

4Good advice from Jo & LT.
I would suggest however that you revise your itinerary to cover the Northern most bits first as DEL starts to heat up in late March
then thru Khajurahao and Orcha to AGR
Rajesthan - final destination being UDAIPUR
Since there ae 2 of you, you could well find 2 guidebooks a help, one being the latest Brand X, the other being a used Brand Y - you never have too much information.
Avoid/ignore all travel touts that will inevitably promise you cheap deals directly by pm , in fact it is best if you report them to TT
This is a more economic use of your time and avoidance of backtracking.
