Cheap Places to Stay in Bali?

I'm am traveling to Bali in May of 2013. I will be backpacking and looking for the way to spend the least amount of money possible on rooms and beds. From what I've seen on the internet most of the hostels and guesthouses around Denpasar are about $20-50 USD a night. I know there must be a bunch of hostels not listed on the internet and perhaps have cheaper prices.

If anyone has any local knowledge of the area and can recommend some decent and cheap places to stay, I would really appreciate that. What should I be expecting to pay for a night at a hostel, and for that matter, what should I expect to spend in Indonesia for a month (USD).

Also, how difficult is it to get by knowing none of the local language? Will some english be understood or will I mostly be pantomiming?

Thanks

Where do you want to stay exactly? In Denpasar?

There are loads of cheap hostels in Bali,in places where backpackers stay. But not many stay in Denpasar......

You can get places in Kuta for less than US$10...

On the language...98% of the tourists in Indonesia speak no Indonesian at all..and most of the other 2% only know a few words ;-)

Sometimes people will speak English...and all the people dealing with tourists (hostels, food, transport etc.) will understand enough.....

If you want to stay in Legian go to Legian Beach Bungalows in Jalan Padma. IDR 150.000 per night. garden, pool, restaurant, quiet but central, 5 mins to the beach - what more could you want/need?

lucapal, I haven't really thought about were I would like to stay. I was just thinking near Denpasar for the first night or so since the airport there, but I would definitely like to get out and around and go to as many places as I can.

Does anybody have any must see locations that they'd recommend? I am up for anything. And what is my best bet for transportation around the island and possibly to different islands?

ok...well,in Denpasar itself (city) there isn't a great deal of interest for most tourists.

Where to stay/go really depends on...your interests. What do you want to do in Bali? Plus...your budget (if its low you won't be going to Nusa Dua for example) and how long you have got in total....

Well I am planning on being in the area for about a month or so. So I don't figure I'll be in too much of a rush. I plan to do some surfing but I also just want to see all I can, experience the culture, visit some ancient sites, possibly go diving. I really am up for anything. It will all be new so it will all be great. I'd like to stumble upon some secluded waterfalls or possibly ruins. I'd like to stuff as much adventure into a month that I can.

And for my budget I'm not really sure how much I should plan for. I was thinking around a grand, but thats just a guess. I am really unsure.

If you want a Kuta hotel, try Kedins Inn II Jl.Poppies 1 Gg. Sorga, Kuta it's 120,000 for a large room with fan and it has a nice pool, phone no is in L Planet, but they don't take advance bookings, plenty of other places on same lane.
I saw this list when I looked up Kedins http://baliwonderland.blogspot.ie/2012/03/cheap-hotel-in-bali.html .
If you want to join the 2% who know a few words of Indonesian ( and get more smiles from Indonesians than the 98% get) , check out http://www.indonesianpod101.com/ , you can download their "Survival Phrases" and learn the basic few words needed to get into the smiled at 2%.

A grand is only $33 per day
I don't think that would be enough after food, travel and excursions.
esp if you want to do things like diving.
