high season in phuket and phi phiI've backpacked in a mutlitude of cities in both SEAsia and Central America. I've never had a problem getting a room.
It seems as though Thailand beaches will be very busy during this time of the year, is there any chance of not being able to get a room in Ko Phi Phi on a Saturday night this January? Or should I just show up and assume I'll get something somewhere? Same question for Phuket also. Prefer to pay between $20 and $40 for a room.

3In Phuket at least, it won't be a problem. Here's a link to Google Street View of Patong Fire Station: http://goo.gl/maps/e4tFH Click somewhere in the sky and then hit the left arrow key to turn the map around to face the opposite direction. Where you see the 7/11 sign on the left, click that spot and then turn left up that narrow street. Immediately after the motobike shop you'll see TJ Mansion. You can rent a room there for about $17 a night. They're friendly people and rooms are clean with abundant hot water showers and airco. The only extra cost is electricity which they charge you 7 Baht a KW for. There are also plenty of other rooms around that area in the same kind of price range. WiFi is also free. Here's a direct link to it: http://goo.gl/maps/MsSvs
Anybody in Patong can tell you where the fire station is. There's also a good restaurant opposite the fire station called Kon Khaen. They have an all-you-can-eat buffet for 129 Baht.
Can't help you with Phi-Phi though I'm afraid.
