Kunming-Vientane quickly and/or cheaplyHi,
I'm thinking about traveling in July from Urumqi (where I'm at) to Kunming by plane, then from there to Vientiane by the fastest and/or cheapest route, then spending a week there with friends, before going to visit other friends in the Philippines (they will take care of travel from Manila, but from what I've seen so far, taking a bus from Vientiane to Bangkok and catching a plane there to Manila is cheapest).
So my main question is: what is the cheapest (without sacrificing too much time) way between Kunming and Vientiane? I've seen some stuff about the direct sleeper bus. I would be flying into Kunming and seeking to leave the same day. It seems the earliest flight gets into Kunming at 15:25. Is that enough time to get to the bus? What is the cheapest way to fly from Kunming to Vientiane? Through Luang Prabang? What is the cost and times for the bus now?
Also, is there any cheaper way (or faster) to get from Vientiane to Manila that what I suggested above? Bus from Vientiane to Bangkok I saw as 800 baht ($26 US) and plane from there to Manila seems to be $275-$300, so about $300 total. How long is the bus from Vientiane to Bangkok?
I'm not looking to sightsee, just make the trip as fast as possible with limited cost.

2I saw it in these posts:
It seems to cross the China-Laos border below Mengla, where G213 (China) and 13 (Laos) meet.

4I want to take the same route. According to China LP 2011, the route is possible and costs around 486 yuan from Kunming's old main long distance bus station @ 17:00, once a day. According to the book, and what I've seen when I was there, it now leaves from the South bus station. Is there a cheaper option to go to the border at Mengla, and then cross over into Laos? Does anyone know the schedule of the shorter-distance buses that pass through?
