north_boy: the problem is that one can buy Canadian money at the wrong place, like an airport kiosk, and have a worse deal than paying the 10% tax on US dollars.

John, yes, that was the rate I got the day before yesterday (Wed.?) at the border with the money exchange guys. It is higher now I think. What I was not sure about is my Cuban exchange rate math which is always confusing to me.

Everything economic in Cuba is confusing. Maybe it will be corrected if the Castro rulers lose power, which is not very likely in our lifetime, especially if the embargo/blockade is never lifted. Congress can do nothing without the approval of the Bautista remnants in Miami.

Currency exchange shouldn't be confusing, even in Cuba. In post #1, Terry gave a link for the Banco Central website. Look at the column marked Compra to find out how many CUC you can buy with your own currency.

The only trick is that for Pounds and Euros*, you multiply the amount of your currency you are exchanging by the number shown, but for all other currencies, you divide the amount you are exchanging by the number shown, to get the number of CUC you can buy.

Plus, remember to subtract 10% from the amount if you are exchanging US dollars.

  • Notice the footnote at the bottom of the table that says that the number shown is CUC per Pound and Euro. All other currencies are dollars (Francs, Yen, etc.) per CUC
