My wife and I are planning to take our five-year-old twin daughters to Italy for the month of April. (We want to visit at that time to miss the end of our winter/mud season here in Vermont.) For a number of reasons, we have narrowed our search to Perugia or Spoleto. Spoleto is my preference; it seems more charming yet still a good base for visiting other areas without a car. Of course, we want to get outside as much as possible, wherever we go.
In researching the weather for April, there is a huge disparity in April weather between Perugia and Spoleto, despite their relative proximity. According to various websites, the April temperature in Perugia is in the 60's (F) and in Spoleto is in the 40's. There is also much more April rain in Spoleto. So my question is: is the April weather in Perugia that much better than Spoleto, and would Spoleto be a good base for visiting in April?
Thank you very much for your help.

I guess it depends who collected the statistics (and the rain water??) and how. I live on the other side of Umbria and can only say the weather is a bit unpredictable in April, but usually significantly warmer at the end of the month than the beginning. Perhaps the Perugia stats were collected on the 30th and the Spoleto ones on the 1st? I would not be surprised to have temperatures in the 40s fahrenheit (Italy always uses Celsius, so that means temps between about 5 and 10C) overnight and daytime in the mid teens, possibly if you're lucky up to about 18 C or so by the end of the month. Can't promise an absence of mud - we had really bad floods here in the Tevere (Tiber) valley in mid November, though for most people life returned to normal in a week or soSpoleto is a smaller and more intimate sort of place, whereas Perugia is the regional capital of Umbria, a large university city, and extremely hilly. Both have reasonable train services though the train stations are in the valley bottom in both towns. You might find http://www.umbriamobilita.it/it of use for all local bus and train times.

I would be surprised if there was a big difference in weather between those 2 places.More likely what Mike suggests..some difference in the collection of stats.
The weather in Italy in April is certainly unpredictable....here in Sicily we can have days of bright sun and 25° followed by days of rain and 10°C. Even snow occasionally ;-)

If anything Perugia will be slightly colder it is further north and a lot higher up, but as lucapal says Italain weather in April can be a real mixed bag it would not be a place I would travel to looking for good weather.
