New flights, Toronto to Cuba

Air Canada has launched a new discount airline called Rouge which, starting next summer will include flights from Toronto to Varadero, Cayo Coco, Holguin and Santa Clara. Prices are said to start at $538(Can) round-trip.
This may start a bit of a price war among the other discount/charters that currently fly these routes.

Nothing new. In the past I flew on Air Canada discount carrier called Tango to Cuba. Now it’s called Rouge

$538(Can) round-trip

From where to where and how long? Toronto to Varadero is advertised for $395 tax in on Sunwing for Jan 2013. I booked 2 wks on Westjet for $405 tax in for next month so I don’t think that price of $538 is cheap for a budget carrier.

These Air Canada charters never seem to be based in Vancouver, so it is necessary to fly to Toronto first, as has been the case for me when I used to go to Marea del Portillo (via Toronto to Manzanillo airport).

The charters don't seem too last, I have gone Canada 3000, Royal Airlines from Vancouver and Toronto and they fizzed out, so good luck with Rouge (wierd name).

I did enjoy Royal Airlines, friend staff, a choice of delicious meals, complimentary wine served with dinner, real cutlery, etc. hmmm maybe that is why that flight is history, but still it was a nice flight experience, without being in first class.

I expect Air Canada's unfathomable decision to remove Cuba from their regularly scheduled check-in page and dump everything into Air Canada Vacations has bit them in the ass long enough now that someone finally noticed, thus the knee jerk reaction to try to re-market Cuba with a "new" airline.

Dummies.

Cheers,
Terry

Air Canada has gone down the no frill budget carrier route twice before with Zip and Tango both no longer in business and their new discount carrier Rouge may suffer the same fate because Canadian travelers want 5* service and amenities at 1* prices. Water will find its own level and if the price and departure and arrival times are right to Cuba it should sell otherwise they are already in a competitive market with the no frill carriers who have more experience selling cheap.

It's easy to get a cheaper round trip flight with West Jet.

I'm a bit confused about something. Will this new-discount-airline-rouge, with the lower paid staff and supposedly lower prices be the only Air Canada option to Cuba from Canada or can we still book a flight and go down there on one of AC's Good planes? Who the heck wants another cheap-assed airline? Not me.

Prices are said to start at $538(Can) round-trip.

I agree, what is so great about that? Oh boy, more free airplane food.

I'm still waiting for ANY carrier other than Air Canada to fly to Havana.

I agree with better departure and arrival times. I can have breakfast at home and get to the airport for my 10.10am departure and arrive in VD at 1.15pm and get to my casa in Havana by 4pm and the return flight is just as nice I can have breakfast with my companion in Havana before leaving at 2.30pm and arriving in Toronto 6pm avoiding the rush hour traffic.

I love flying Cubana Airline because they have a business section up front with 2 seats per roll and a separate check-in line and first on and first off the plane. An appetizer of shrimp cocktail and free drinks followed by your meal on real china and free wine and dessert and we had our only hostess. If Cubana Airline was still flying into Cfgos I would take it regardless of the price. Pre 9/11 the passengers in business class could enter the cockpit and speak to the pilots and the flight crew would often sit with the passengers if there was an empty seat on take off and landing. Those were the golden years of air travel.
