Domestic Flights & Car Rentals

We'll be in South Africa in January-February, first on tour, then with relatives in Cape Town and then renting a car for the Garden Route. We are considering flying to Port Elizabeth from Cape Town, renting a car there, and driving the Garden Route back to Cape Town. That way, we'll have more time to do the route very leisurely, stay in a place, if we like it, and visit any nature parks/reserves in eight days. Also, I thought it might be easier to get used to driving on the left, if we rent a car starting at the PE airport, rather than Cape Town!
I've checked the various domestic airlines for the price from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth in February and they are all very close in price, with British Airways (operated by Comair) being the lowest price - different than I expected based on what I've read on the TT. Any comments on this?
Also, does anyone have experience renting a car along with purchasing flight tickets directly from the airline? I’m wondering if this works out favorably. I’ll do a bit of calculating myself, too.

We rented a car in Cape Town from a broker http://www.aroundaboutcars.com/ and it ended up being very cheap for a small car at $20 per day including a one-way fee ($50 for drop off in Durban) and insurance.

Comair is an excellent airline, you should have no problems getting tickets from them but book early or the prices will rise!

Thanks, all, for the tips. Indeed, Mango, is now flying to Port Elizabeth (they weren't when I first checked) and they are as much as R351 cheaper than British Airways (depending on day). Alas, they don't fly on the day we want to go and it's a late afternoon flight if we would change our date, so we would lose part of a day. Interesting to read about fastjet's takeover of 1Time. Kulula is connected to British Airways and was the same flight and price. Funny, just checked British Airways and the price went down R8 on the taxes – strange.
I'm still researching car rentals and will look into aroundaboutcars.com
Again, thanks very much.

Have vacationed many times in SA and have always rented from Tempest. Have never had a bad experience with them. Even when I ripped the side mirror off the car, they treated me reasonably.

I recently went on a holiday with some friends from abroad, and we used kulula.com to plan our holiday (after some research into available options). They have some excellent deals that include flights, car rental and accommodation. I was very pleased with their service and everything ran smoothly.

Best,

Jem

Thanks all for the responses. Just back from four weeks in South Africa. We flew on British Airways from Capetown to Port Elizabeth and rented a car thru Avis. Car rental wasn't cheap cuz we rented an automatic. Survived driving on the left - roads were great and not very much traffic where we were, although driving on the left never became "automatic" for me. We always had to keep repeating, "stay left, stay left" as we drove.
Many, many highlights during our trip - most definitely recommend Addo Elephant Park - 100s of elephants up close!
