India 9 days - tips

Hi folks!

In February I will head to India to attend a colleague's wedding. The ceremony will take place in Udaipur.

I will be arriving in Delhi on the 9th of February and I will leave also from Delhi on the 17th (I have 8 complete days). As I see it, I will just have time to do regular sightseeing as my time is limited (unfortunately, due to work I couldn't stay longer). My plan is as follows:

9-10: Delhi
11: Agra (Taj Mahal)
11-12: (Nigthtrain from Delhi to Joghpur)
12: Jodhpur
13-15: Udaipur (unskippable -I have the wedding those days-)
16: Trip back to Delhi and do some more sightseeing there.

What do you blokes reckon about this itinerary? I know it's tight... but I just want to get the best out of my time. I have some concrete questions:

  • Is there any place to visit you would recommend instead of Jodhpur (it should be on the way between Delhi and Udaipur).
  • I really like to do local/non touristic things (get involved with locals, local restaurant/taverns, countryside villages...). Do you have any experience/tip/advice to share about this around the places I will be at?
  • Any other advice/tip you consider I should know when going to India are happily welcome!

Thanks a lot for your help in advance! I really appreciate all your answers!

Cheers!
Juan

Why would you head back to Delhi for Jodhpur? You should consider bus/train to Jaipur (4 hrs) then onward to Jodhpur (4 hrs). Better yet, pamper yourself and hire a chauffeur for tour of Fatephur Sikri (far better whatever you see in Delhi), then Jaipur, Jodhpur, and drop you off in Udaipur.

You need only 2-5 hours to see main attractions in each of those cities. Jaipur's main site is the Amber Fort.

I think your itinerary looks fine...a bit rushed, but you don't have long anyway.

You could however, take the early train to Agra, leave your bags at the station baggage place in Agra or rent a really cheap room for your bags.

Then catch the 20:10 night train that same night from Agra to Jodhpur, you will arrive the next morning at 6:00, Agra is quite a horrible place...and you could see the main sights in a day and then you don't have to go all the way back to Delhi.

Hi Juan,

A couple of comments from side:-

1. Try and see if you can fit in Fatehpur Sikri in your trip to Agra. Your call - Delhi sightseeing vs Fatehpur Sikri
2. Instead of Jodhpur, I would recommend Jaipur - reason: it is on the way to Udaipur and just 5 hrs max from Delhi..Jodhpur will be little longer journey...

Places to see in Delhi: Red Fort, Jama Masjid, India Gate, President House (Rashtrapati Bhawan), Qutub Minar, Lotus Temple, Old Fort, Chandni Chowk (Old Delhi, some amazing street food and chance to mingle with the locals), Humayun's Tomb, Lodhi Gardens etc...You can't cover all so take your pick

Places to see in Jaipur: Amer Palace, Jaigarh Fort, Hawa Mahal, Handlooms, Chauki Dhani (traditional Rajashtani food), Nahalgarh etc

I am sure you will get more than enough opinions for Udaipur from your colleague's family/friends...

Cheers!

Jodhpur is in my opinion much nicer than Jaipur.

Everyone has his/her own choices/tastes etc..Fair enough

The above was just my opinion for Juan, rest is up to him to decide...and one reason for suggesting Jaipur was the Delhi-Udaipur route and less traveling for him.

Cheers!

I really like to do local/non touristic things (get involved with locals, local restaurant/taverns, countryside villages...).

Sounds good and perhaps on your next visit to India (when you have more time) you can visit some non-touristic places but this time on your short 8 day trip there is hardly any flexibility in your plan since you are going to be in Agra for the Taj Mahal on the 11th and then you have to be in Udaipur on the 13th for the wedding leaving you only one day (12th) free to decide whether you should go to Jodpur or somewhere else on the way to Udaipur.

Instead of your current plan of:
Delhi-Agra-Delhi-Jodupur-Udaipur you could do the route:
Delhi-Agra-Fatehpur Sikri- Jaipur-Udaipur which as vatsal indicated will be less travelling for you.

There are many options and places on the way to Udaipur from Delhi but you don't have the time and it would be best to keep it simple and stick to your planned itinerary and arrive healthy and safe in Udaipur to enjoy your friend's wedding.

HI juanzinho ,
As u r saying that u have only 9 days of your trip in india this is so short time to visit india . but it is ok that u r keeping rajesthan for this trip . as following metthyboy i will also suggest u to do fist delhi to agra just for taj then after u can move for jaipur by any kind of goverment bus ,they r moving every after 2 hours, stay one night in jaipur then next u can go pushker or jodhpur , jodhpur is more worth full then pushker 5 to 6 bus go to jodhpur by privet company one night then udaipur or jaisalmer , udaipur is more better then jaisalmer because u have wedding there u can find a CAR in just 2200 Rs & this will show u ranakpur with kumbalgar as well this is so cheap & u can find it at gucci's shop a internet place .
After finish wedding come to jodhpur then jaisalmer or delhi then back to home .
thnx to all my friends
