christmas in thailand

hello all, im going to be flying into bangkok on the 21st and am not sure on whether to stay in bangkok for christmas or head down to koh phangan (currently booked to arrive in koh phangan on 26th). Does anyone have experience of what the two places are like at this time of year? I am aware that as a bhuddist country christmas isnt really celebrated but it would be nice to be somewhere where there is some sort of celebration going on.

thanks

Christmas is everywhere ... the Bangkok malls have been celebrating it for months now. Both areas will be very busy at this time of year. Head to the beach ... get the hell out of the big city for xmas.

Judging by alot of the recent posts here from people trying to get down the islands for NYE it would appears things are getting booked up fast. Not so sure about for Christmas day but Id look into getting a ticket.

I spent the day on Koh Samui one year. Got a full christmas dinner with all the trimmings for 300 baht somewhere on Chaweng!

Currently booked on what? Might cost too much to do a change from however you're going.
A bigger problem could be finding accommodation if you're looking at the lower to mid end of the scale.

If your heading to Koh phangan dont spend all your time on Had rin as its so ordinary. Its nice to hire a moped and ride around the island. For the best vibes get a long tail boat from had rin to Had tien. The Friday night party at Guys bar is the best on the island and Saturday night and a bar close by is just as good. You will get a nice christmas vibe at 'the sanctuary' on had tien.

Too close , you might need to book in advance for train or low fare flightds like airasia. even there is low season but everybody going there for FMP.

if they're fully booked otherwise you might need to catch bus (overnight) +boat instead. http://www.lomprayah.com/

Xmas lovers should stay in Bkk and visit the malls. Enough tinsel, fake trees and jinger bells musak to make a westerner feel right at home.
Probably every big hotel will be offering an Xmas dinner.
