train travel from Rome Italy to Munich Germany via Salzberg., Austria

Hi,
This is my second time to Europe - two years ago my wife and I did a 10 day trip from Zurich to Paris to London by train thru the Alps. It was fast but fun. Most of the time in the Alps was rainy and cloudy and we did not see much, in Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen. In May 2013, my wife and I wish to fly into Rome, Italy for a three day visit, then take a train to Venice, Italy for an overnight and morning. The next afternoon, we wish to take a train trip through the eastern Alps to Salzberg or Innsbruck Austria for one or two days stay. Then we wish to take a train to Munich for a two or three day visit in Munich alpine area. Then we will fly back to USA from Munich. Can this be done? The main things we wish to do is take a DAY trip through the Alps (with perhaps a short stop somewhere in the Alps), at least two days to visit Salzberg and/or Innsbruck, and three days to visit Munich and a couple of the Alpine walled villages near Munich, and at least two or three days in Rome, in addition, with a few hours in Venice to at least have time to take a canal boat ride. We have only about 12 days to do this and two of those days would be fly days to and from the US. Is this a possible itinerary? What would you do to get a quick overview of this beautiful area of Europe. Two years ago we spent three days in Lauterbrunnen SW and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though it rained or was cloudy most of the time while in the Alps. Would love to go back or at least to the Matterhorn area, but a train ride this spring thru the eastern alps would be sufficient. Thanks for helping me out with this.

Yes,it can be done.

Personally it is too much and too fast...but it is not impossible.

3 nights in Rome will give you a brief look at the main sights.

Train to Venice is about 3.5-4 hours from Rome,so you can arrive there for afternoon and have a canal boat ride (bring plenty of cash ;-)

I'd stay more time in Venice, but it would be possible to leave next morning for Salzburg..that's about 6.30 hours by train.A couple of nights there and then on to Munich (that's only 1.30).

Why not start in Venice and leave Rome for a next time? It's almost sinful to go from Rome to Venice not paying tribute to Florence and the other wonders of Tuscany. And it is no less sinful to limit a visit to Venice to an in between trains stop.

I agree with everything above. I suggest the following:
Day 1: land in Rome
Day 4: Rome dp by train 18.45 - Venice ar 22.17. Sleep in the quiet part of Cannaregio quarter, close to the railway station (hotels Stella Alpina, Dolomiti, Villa Rosa, etc.)
Day 6: Venice dp by train 17.36 - Calalzo ar 20.22, dp by bus 20.30 - Cortina d'Ampezzo ar 21.23
Day 7: Cortina d'Ampezzo dp by bus 10.05 - Toblach ar 10.50, dp by train 11.06 - Lienz in Osttirol ar 12.23, dp by bus 13.30 - Felbertauerntunnel - Mittersill ar 14.40, dp by train 15.08 - Zell am See ar 15.55. Zell am See dp every hour until 18.48 - Salzburg ar 1 3/4 hrs later.
You may use the spare days for a stay in the Alps, between Cortina d'Ampezzo and Zell am See.
