10 days in chile??
Hi all helpful travellers,From tomorrow, Dec 15th, I have an unexpected 10 days in Chile with my 7 yr old son, after travelling around other L.A. countries for 6 months. I know nothing about Chile. We fly in to Santiago, and I would like to know of anywhere cool, unusual, scenic, interesting and fun to hang out that is no more than say....12 hours bus journey from Santiago. We like small to medium sized towns, beaches, shortish treks, traditional lifestyles, and not St Moritz style bling. Any helpful suggestions are sooo appreciated, as I cannot access my Lonely Planet 'Chile' chapters on internet-cafe computers here in Brazil!! La Serena sounds interesting, but not if it is just a big old city????
Thanks,
Laura and Frano.

Lake district would be a good bet. You could start in Pucon and visit other places from there.2
Yes, for 10 days, I'd recommend the Lake District as well. There are also superb ocean beaches in this area.3
Spending two or three days at the Colchagua Valley, around the town of Santa Cruz would be another interesting possibility. Besides the rich traditional culture and scenic beauty of the area, its gastronomy, its wineries (and B&Bs), the various handicrafts typical of the Chile's central valley and the tours of the local farms (with the possibility of horseback riding and other fun activities), are also attractive.
