Camping in March
Hi Folks!I will be in Iceland from March 8 - 16, and the plan is to camp. However, I'm noticing that most of the camping sites and parks aren't open until June. Do you know how strict the rules are on camping in places that aren't open? In other words, is there a way I can still camp, or should I look into other accommodations? Also, are there non-advertised places where I can camp? I intend to travel in the Southern and South-Eastern parts of Iceland...
Cheers!

A significant issue is that this is long before the end of winter and snow is likely to be lying in many places, deep even, and substantial snow could fall on your tent while you are in it. Near the coast snow often melts between falls, though in a cold snap it does not always do so, and it can also be warm enough to rain. Some more informal campsites are in principle usable at any time, though the toilet block might be locked out of season, or the water turned off to prevent frost damage to the plumbing. You won't be able to camp in Reykjavik. Wild camping is OK so long as it is not on cultivated land, close to a building or an operating campsite. However in general it is a bit tricky to wild camp along the ringroad in south Iceland as so much land is fenced, or else so rough as to be uncampable. Are you really that desperate to want to put up with all that?
