Places to Stay While Driving From Tucson to Sayulita?

Hello,

So, I know this is a bit last minute, but I'm crossing the Nogales border tomorrow (12/13), and have several questions.
I plan to arrive at the border at approx. 8am and would like to be in Sayulita by Sat. (I have a reservation at the Hostel there). Originally I was planning on making it to San Carlos on day 1, then driving to Sayulita in 2 more days, but I'm wondering if I might be able to drive further than San Carlos on the first day? It looks like it's about 4 hrs., once I make it through the border. Is that accurate?
Is driving to Los Mochis in 1 day out of the question? How about Ciudad Obregon? I'm not going to be driving at night, and don't want to overdo the drive time on any one day.

Basically, does anyone have recommendations for nice/interesting/safe towns to stay in that will get me to Sayulita by Sat., and/or are there any towns along the coastal route that I should definitely avoid right now?

Oh, and specific recommendations for budget-friendly hotels/hostels along the way would be more than welcomed!

Thanks so much! Any quick replies would be greatly appreciated!

I usually cross the border when the Nogales truck crossing opens at 6am, go through the paperwork and out of there by 7am. I stay in Navojoa the first night then I will either drive straight through or stop in Mazatlan and be in Guayabitos the next morning...

Thanks! I'll see how it goes - if I don't think I can make it to Navajoa, then I might just stay in San Carlos/Guaymas as originally planned.
Any info. on Ciudad Obregon? My guide book doesn't say a thing about it. I'll find out what I can on-line.

There are plenty of no-tell motels at the entrance and end of most all towns, secure parking and pets welcome...

I have done that drive many times and cross the border at about 6;30. Am able to make Mochis in ten hours. At the least you should be able to make Obregon.

One thing that is really nice about Navajoa is you can stay right on the Highway. Since you are new to this route, the Best Western is so easy to find and has good reviews. Sayulita is possible the next day.

Thanks again for the tips.
Funny enough, I logged on from the Best Western to see Careyeroslib's post. Price was a little higher than I hoped to spend, but I pulled into Navojoa just as it was getting dark (some stormy weather, and a wrong-turn at the detour leaving Ciudad Obregon, delayed me just a bit...) - not knowing what to expect in town, I took the first thing that looked ok. Turns out there's a hotel down the street that looks decent enough from the outside, and at a third of the price (and yes, I know - looks can be deceiving).
Live and learn, live and learn...
I'll try to make it to Sayulita tomorrow. If not, maybe a night around Mazatlan, San Blas, or...?

What's the name of the hotel in Navajoa that costs less than Best Western? I'm driving down to Sayulita next week and don't want to spend so much. Last year I drove with a friend who took me to a very sweet hotel in Guasave that cost about $15 US for a very clean single room. The interior was painted Barbie pink. Does anyone know the name and location of this hotel? I tried to find it again and went around and around in rush hour traffic to no avail.
