Transit visa to stay in Addis Ababa

I will have a one night layover in Addis Ababa en route from Malawi to the UK at the end of this. I have seen other people on these forums have done similarly.

My question is regarding visa requirements (I am from the UK). I gather visas for UK citizens can be obtained on arrival for $20. However, someone mentioned that they managed to get a 'transit visa' for free - does anyone know if this is (still) possible? I think they left their passports at the airport - is this recommended? (I wouldn't feel very comfortable parting with my passport).

Additionally, if I do need to pay a $20 charge for a visa, I have unfortunately spent all my foreign exchange while in Malawi, so have no USD left. Is it possible to pay using Ethiopian Birr, and can these be withdrawn from an ATM before passing through immigration?

Many thanks!

I think you should be entitled to a free transit visa. I think it is normal to leave passports in these circumstances.

You can leave your passport in the airport, provided you have some type of ID that shows your picture and number. You can withdrew money in birr, it is possible either in Sheraton or near by ATM.

IF you have to pay, you cannot do so in Birr!!!
