Ko Mak sand flies

Greeting--

Ko Mak is one of my favorite Thai islands......... But, last year we were there in February and were eaten alive by sand flies. We were there a couple of years ago and had no problem.

So, my questions are: Has anyone been there within the past few weeks? What's the fly situation? How come Ko Kut doesn't have this problem? Are there better months?

Thanks

2 things about Koh Mak.

In the middle of this year, Ball (the island manager) anounced on his facebook account, that they started a campaign against the sandflies. Guess they did some spraying on the beach.

Second, use plenty of coconut oil and avoid lonely beaches. Sandflies don't like coconut oil and prefer lonely beaches because they put the eggs in the sand. That is why most of the ressorts take good care of their beach in order to prevent sandflies from breeding. And yes, it is a seasonal thing, sometimes you have alot, sometimes none at all. Last year in December I had about 20 bites in my legs. Did not use coconutoil and was walking on lonely beach :-)

Enjoy Koh Mak!

I was there in March and they were certainly present, I also found there was a lot of trash on the beaches when you were not in front of a resort.

But this is everywhere the same, because the ressorts only take care about the beach infront. On Koh Mak they have from time to time beach cleaning campaigns where tourists can join and help. Did not see elsewhere. But the ocean is full of trash, so no wonder there is no nice sandy beach without ressort and no trash.
