sen monorom versus Kratie

Hi,

My family (2 adults and two children aged 9 and 3) will be traveling for 7 weeks through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. In the interst of simplifing the itinerary, I am trying to decide between traveling to either Kratie or Sen Monorom. We will have just completed our Vietnam component (~3 weeks). We will start our Cambodia portion in Kampong Cham.

The questions I have for (Kratie and Sen Monorom) are:
How do the journeys from Kampong Cham compare?
Has any one with young children been to one or both, did they enjoy the visits?
Would one be better for young children versus the other? What di they like/not like?

{Just as background, we have traveled with the older one (when she was 4) through Eastern/Southern Africa on Public transportation and with both kids in Europe and Mexico.}

Thanks for any help provided.

Kratie is a little bit closer (I think) than Senmonorom, but I don't thin there is that much for kids to do in Kratie. I have not traveled in Cambodia with my own son, but as far as activities for kids go, you could probably do elephant riding in Mondulkiri (Senmonorom). Aside from that, I am not sure what there is for kids to do in Northeast Cambodia. It is more of a place for trekking and visiting tribal people, but the tribal people are going to look like regular (if poor) people, rather than, say the "long neck" people of Northern Thailand (forget the name of the tribe, sorry) -a site which might be interesting to kids. So, I don't really know how to advise on this.

I liked the weaving villages and rural areas around Kampong Cham . I cant recall anything there, that would interest my kids at 9 and 3 .
Our kids liked the beaches,snorkelling ,train journeys,escalators, toy shops and anywhere there was other kids .

I have done both, it is far easier to get to Kratie, just up the road for 2 hours? by bus. For SM I had to take a minivan which was packed over 30 people in it, took about 4 hours, not too bad. Unless you are doing trekking I would go to Kratie, pleasant town, go across the river on the ferry to the island in Mekong, hire a bike for $1 at landing and cycle around for a few hours and then take ferry back to town. You can also cycle along the river south of town and then into the rice fields, there are a few temples along this route, see LP guide or you can get maps of routes in Kratie. Also for kids go and see the dolpins about 15 kms north of Kratie, plenty of tours in town.

The island at K Cham is also well worth exploring by bike, ferry is $1 return, just pay when landing, don't pay coming back, very friendly but don't go after heavy rain as too muddy to cycle.

Herbie, I've been to both as well. I preferred Senmonomorom/Mondulkiri because I like going into the jungle. Can anyone find out if the rental bikes have seats for children on the back of them for the ride around the Mekong Island? I'm not sure about that. Here is a TravelFish's link to their Kratie guide: http://www.travelfish.org/location/cambodia/northeastern_cambodia/kratie/kratie

I would be thinking elephant ride for kids, that's why I would go with Mondulkiri. Dolphins might be fun. Don't know as I haven't tried seeing them, but as I understand it, they don't jump out of the water and do flips or anything; they just sort of briefly surface, and you might catch a glimpse of one as it comes up for air.

Well the ones at the landing place did not have child seats I don't think, you maybe able rent some in town and then take them over on the ferry, they will charge a bit more but it is not expensive.
