Easy buses to Patagonian glaciers

Hi!

My boyfriend and I want to go to see the glaciers in southern Patagonia in mid December 2012. We would like to know which glacier or glaciers(Chilean or Argentinean) are easier to get to by bus from either Santiago or preferably Buenos Aires but are open to more ideas.

Flying is not an option as it's not in our budget. Our guide book doesn't really give us very direct bus route info or prices and with limited time we don't want to make too many stops along the way (we were thinking about 2-3 weeks in Patagonia).

Has anyone had experience doing this all by bus and how? and possible prices of buses if remembered? any info or website links would be greatly appreciated :)

thanks heaps!

The easiest glacier to get to is probably Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate. You need to take 2 buses from BsAs first to Rio Gallegos (38hrs) and then to El Calafate (4hrs), the total price in Pesos is about ARS1355 in Semi-Cama (but I would up grade to Cama for an extra ARS140). So that is a total of USD273 or €212.

Flights from BsAs to El Calafate take 3.5hrs and cost about ARS1373.

I would fly!

Yes, I agree. The Perito Moreno Glacier is the most accessible by bus from El Calafate. However I also flew from El Calafate to BA as my holiday needed to be rushed so can't comment on the longer bus routes.

be aware of the distances and flights are more or less the same as a bus. It won´t make much sense just to go to see the glaciar Perito Moreno but including El Chalten, Torres del paine and Ushuaia. All offer spectacular scenety and all kind of outdoors
