Best way to travel from Split to Mostar/Sarajevo then Slovenia
Hello,Would appreciate any advice on the best way to get from Split to Mostar. Is there a train or bus? What's the journey like? Is there nice scenery?
From Mostar would like to take a train to Sarajevo as I've been told the route is very scenic. That's why I was hoping not to have to hire a car from Split. But if we do end up in a car, what's the road like?
Also, after Sarajevo, plan to head to Slovenia. If we're in a car, is it a tedious journey? Is there a train? OR should we consider flying?

If the transport links are good, as they seem to be, I always choose bus or train. It just depends on your plans and how much time you have to meander, etc.Hope someone else will chime in about best way to get from Sarajevo to Slovenia--you might want to mention where in Slovenia you are headed--I assume Ljubljana?

Hope someone else will chime in about best way to get from Sarajevo to Slovenia--you might want to mention where in Slovenia you are headed--I assume Ljubljana?OP, Veta, not sure about the best way but I sometimes drove Sarajevo to Tuzla, Brcko and Slavonski Brod (nice ride) and from there the very boring motorway Zagreb, Ljubljana.
Much nicer but timeconsuming Jajce, Bihac, Karlovac. Recent October we drove the Bihac, Ljubljana leg and also sceneric. Good opportunity to include the Plitvice Waterfalls/lakes.
Consider flying.

Thanks. That's food for thought.Drawback with flying to Ljubjana is we'd have to miss Plitvice. (?)

We have about 10 days in which to cover Mostar, Sarajevo and Slovenia.
Would much appreciate the benefit of anyone's experience.

Any opinions on the easiest way of getting around Slovenia? (To visit Ljubjana, Bled, Postojna, Julian Alps. Also open to any suggestions of worthwhile places). By car or public transport . considering roads etc.#indigofree, can't compare the means of transport because I always used a car. Roads are ok. If covering the Soca Valley, take a car.
What I do know: there's a fantastic trainride between Bled and Most na Soci, part of the year even an 'antique' locomotive.
Better consult previous posts about worthwhile places. One of my favorites are the Skocjan Caves.
There must be better experts for the transport issue.

Thanks for your tips. There seem to be so many beautiful train rides to take. But I think we're leaning towards the car for Slovenia. Hopefully we'll still be able to enjoy the scenery.Everything I read about in Slovenia sounds so breathtakingly beautiful. Makes me want to see them all, but I will only have about 3 or maybe 4 days.
I've read that the Skocjan caves are not as crowded with visitors as Postojna. Is that your experience?
Would you advise staying in Ljubjana to visit the caves. And then staying somewhere like Kobarid to explore the Soca Valley?
Would appreciate any advice.

Two weeks ago my wife and I took a train from Ploce to Mostar and onto Sarajevo. This is one of Europe's most scenic rail journeys, winding through spectacular mountain passes. Tickets are cheap and valid for one month so you can jump on& off- just be sure to get your ticket stamped on arrival ( eg at Mostar). Ploce is a two and a half hour bus ride south of Split(on the hourly Split-Dubrovnik service). There's nothing really to see in Ploce itself but the bus/train station has a very cool resident tabby cat that will escort you around. The c1950s Swiss train carriages on this route are a delight.

That sounds fantastic!How far in advance did you buy your bus and train tickets? Is it necessary to book ahead?
One other question please ... how much time would you recommend for Mostar? 1 or 2 nights?

A full day and a night in Mostar is probably enough but there are some intresting side trips that you could allow more time for. As for booking tickets, we had no problems getting them on the spot in Ploce - the train was very empty (however we were travelling in the off-season - not sure how you might book ahead, maybe at the train station in Split. Note: Split is on a different line to Ploce).
