Sumatra: Padang to Palembang

Hi all, I'm wanting to get from either bukkitingi or padang by bus to Palembang in the next few days as I have a flight from there. Does anyone happen to know anything about buses that travel this route, where to catch them, cost, timing, and frequency, or even just how to find out while here!

Anything would be great, thanks!

If you check out http://journals.worldnomads.com/merantau and read: "Roads Less Travelled: Travelling the Trans-Sumatran Highway 1973" you'll see photos and a report of the trip from bygone days. It's a bit of a breeze these days I believe

Hi,

I think you will find some of the Padang to Jakarta buses go through Palembang - well at least they did back in 2000.

When I was in Bukittinggi and wanted to go to Pekanbaru I just went to the bus station a day or so before to find out the timetable and prices. There were a lot of 'travels' in the streets near the bus station which went to Padang - not sure if they went to other places too. There are many travel agents in the streets too who want to do business. You are not alone.

Thanks all! I managed to get a ticket fairly easily in bukittinggi, though it seems only one company has a bus to Palembang, called yoanda. 185,000 for AC, and (in theory) 22 hours. In padang, no one seemed to know about the buses, though I didn't ask the travels, just hotels and guesthouses, and the tourist information centre. Thanks!
