Learn to surf

Hi. 40 year old guy here traveling to Bali solo next week and want to learn to surf. I will stay 7 days and would like to spend a few hours each day and have some lessons. I looked into a surf camp at keramas but it seems a bit isolated. Does anyone know of anything similar around seminyak or somewhere else that's not so isolated.
Cheers

There are many surf schools in the Kuta / Legian / Seminyak stretch - take your pick.

If you want something a bit more Surf Dominant and away from all the crowds and BS, you could head up to Canggu (20 mins on the scooter from Seminyak) and try a place like this - http://www.thechillhouse.com/en

If you have not surfed before, taking a course of 5-7 days will be tough on your body! - How is your fitness / water skills?

Thanks for the tips. Will check out the link and also places around seminyak. Probably leaning toward a couple of hours a day rather than full days so fitness shouldn't be a problem.

Good on yah - 2 hours in the water when you're learning is plenty.

Enjoy Bali and the surfing.

Just walk on the beach and you will have plenty of offers. In Kuta-semanyak the surf is normally small. Before you pay up, have a look and see if most people are actually surfing, I've been approached when conditions are shit, and no-one is catching a wave. Try to read a surfing learners book before you go so you can recognise the different types of waves. No point paying for a lesson when all the waves are dumpers. This happens in Kuta about 1/3 of the time I've watched the waves there. Get out there and enjoy, as long as it's not dumping.

Hi all,

Read the replies to this post (and many, many others) on the topic of learning to surf in Bali.

I'm heading out there in May or June of this year (depends on which month work will authorise).

I have about 12 days planned around Kuta dedicated only to improving my surfing. I have been surfing here in Oz for a little while but am definitely not past the beginner stage yet.

I've narrowed down my plans to the following:

a) The chill house (as recommended by other posters) and there 10 lesson a week surf lesson program or;

b) Pro School Surf Bali (and find some cheap accomodation around Kuta)

I read some comments on both on Trip Advisor but was wondering if any Thorn Tree users had reviews/experiences/comments to share to help me decide? At face value, the chill house seems a much pricer option both from a surfing perspective and an accomodation perspective.

Also, my 2011 LP Indonesia is not very chatty about Canggu in general and neither is the forum. Good food/cafes, etc.
Anyone keen to share some thoughts?

Thanks.
