Jeeps wait outside in the carpark of Gorakpur rail station. Touts will ask you where you are going. Better to just walk around and look for empty (or overloaded jeep!!) They normally seat 9-12 passengers and travel with 14-18 so hopefully you will find one where you can squeeze in the front or middle seat. Be cool and confident! I am an Amazon and the trip is uncomfortable but cheap. Have done it at least 8 times! I think I last paid 200 Indian rupees in 2009. Maybe 300 r's by now. There are jeeps all day until late night. The best time to arrive is very early morning (on overnight train) and hopefully you can get a bus from Sonauli to KTM the same day otherwise you must overnight in Sonauli. Not very appealing!!! Bring mosquito repellent! Plan on paying a bit more and maybe sharing a van from a travel agent in Sonauli up to KTM. No direct transport in my experience from Gorakpur to KTM, despite what the touts say. Indians and locals use vans rather than thecrampd small seated local buses as the trip (with meal and toilet breaks) can take 12 hours to go 220 kms!!! It's one of the worst roads I have experienced anywhere but all good fun! I have travelled alone and with my ex and no different for me as I ALWAYS cover up and dress VERY conservatively i.e. long pants, scarf, long sleeved cotton top. Nepalis appear to be more respectful and considerate in my experience. Have a wondrous time and turn up your bullsh*t meter!6
Nothing to fear. Once you've done it, you'll know how simple it is. Just like anything! Be cool and dress conservatively and say you're brother is meeting you in Kathmandu, if anyone asks. I cannot stress enough that you should act like this is something you do often. If in doubt bullsh*t. Good luck. You'll have fun! Your intuition needs to be turned up a notch in Nepal and India!
