Tours and prices for Lac Assal and Abbe
Hi thereI am visiting Ethiopia in February and I am considering going to Djibouti in order to see the Lacs. Is anyone able to recommend a tour agency or a guide that I could use? Additionally, it would be helpful to know how much I should expect to pay.

Hi Peter!Planet Travel is the right place for you. Djiboutian company, very friendly people. Will welcome in airport, sort visa issues, book hotel for you and take you there. They also offer tours around the country including the lakes.
Car also available to take you around the city.
Prices may vary depending on how many people are with you. But generally minimum is US$75.

Djibouti prices are as high as Europe or the US for most things. If you go next door to Ethiopia or Somaliland, the prices plummet.4
Thanks for your responses. Although I was aware that Djibouti is more expensive than Ethiopia and Somaliland, $700 exceeds my expectations, but it is useful to know.Out of interest Viaggero, are you aware of how much a five day trip to the Danakil Depression would approximately cost?

I knew about the prices ahead of time because I was coordinating with an ex-pat there. At the time the cheapest hotel there cost $35 per day, the next one cost around $75 per day, and from what I've heard, the cheap one no longer exists.Although I didn't go there, if I remember correctly from posts and conversations, I believe you'll pay over $100 per day minimum (but exactly - I'm not sure) to go there. Just run a search on it.

Thanks again!I did actually extensively search this two weeks ago, but the prices people have paid seem to significantly fluctuate. I also emailed a few tour agencies, but they were quoting around $2,000 for a five day trip. My main debate now is whether to take the risk of just turning up and hoping to find a tour once I am there.

That will depend on the time of year. I went in June and couldn't find people for the tours I wanted to the South of the Ethiopia and think that you will have similar issues in the Danakil.11
I am in Djibouti at the moment - several taxi drivers have quoted me around $130 for a day trip to Lac Assal - I am one person. I'm contemplating going tomorrow but probably won't as the price is still quite high.I went swimming with whale sharks yesterday- worth every cent....amazing!
If anybody is in Djibouti in the next 1-2 days and wants to share costs for a Lac Assal +/- Lac Abbé trip, then let me know ASAP.

Just returned from Djibouti. We couldn't find any taxi drivers that wanted to go out to Lac Assal so we ended up using a driver/guide through the Sheraton hotel. Originally he wanted $300 but we negotiated down to $180 for two people. Worked out well as he knew a few spots the taxi probably would not have known.14
Kangaroo_islander,I wanted to ask you about swimming with the whales and hotels in the bay region.
I consider going to DJI to see the lake Assal and do the whale swimming in OCT. I have planned 3 days for it and wanted to ask which company you chose for the whale swimming, and whether there is anything else except these two things that are worth seeing.
Also, would you recommend renting a car and going to lake Assal on our own? Do you need to know the speical places, or is it all the same everywhere in the lake area?
