Zanzibar's beaches
Hi everyone,I have about 3 nights and 4 days in Zanzibar before the rest of my group arrives, and am looking for a laid back, solo-traveler-friendly beach with other young travelers in their 30s but not a huge party scene. When my group arrives, we will do Stone Town and other attractions, so I would love to relax, do a boat trip, go on one of the forest walks, maybe visit Chumbe Island Coral Park, eat good food and hang out.
Does anyone have comments/comparisons/recommendations for:
Kendwa
Matemwe
Pongwe
Jambiani
Any particularly great lodges/guesthouses and tour companies to seek out or avoid?
Thank you!

Zanzibar has the beaches that you have mentioned and where to stay is much determinec by what you want to do while in ZanzibarWhen you are thinking of doing prison island, spice tour, city tour and the mangapwani prison caves you would better do this from either on the last day before flying out of zanzibar if your flight is a late one or do it a day before the flight if the flight the next day is a morning one or anightone or overnight in stone town
If you intend to visit jozani forest and do the dolphins i do recommend that you either stay or do it from stone town or from paje
Cultural tours, bussy nights and boat trips can be taken from kendwa and nungwi
If you just want to lazy at the beach i suggest matemwe beaches

I stayed at Paje (which is not one that you mentioned) and didn't really enjoy it because it was full of kite surfers. That made it difficult to swim as they were zig-zagging across the water in a dangerous manner and it also made it difficult to socialise as in the bars at night it was all kite-surfers talking about kite-surfing. Boring! Also, the tide went out like about a million miles in the middle of the day. Most people I spoke to, local and tourist, said good things about Nungwi.
I also found a hotel called "Kendwa Rocks" on the internet. It looked good and I would have stayed there except that it was full already when I wanted to go. If you are going over new year, book now.

HiI suggest that you visit the South East Coast, but check out Jambiani. Kendwa, Nungwi and Paje are the party spots, and while they have great beaches, Jambiani has kept its nice and quiet charm.
There are a couple of guesthouses which are not very present online, but you can find them. Check these out:
Garden Bungalows, Dhow Beach Inn, Baghani Guesthouse, Kimte, etc.
In Jambiani, you will have the opportunity to meet other travellers, but if you choose to, it's easy to stay to yourself. There is also a new tour operator, set up by two locals that just graduated from the local tourism school - we did one, two trip with them, which I cannot find any other tour operator doing, and it was a pretty good trip to a local village somewhere in the south and to an abandoned hotel site - it was really unusual, but really good. Maybe you can join existing tours or a group with them? They are called Mambo Poa - they have a website somewhere.
Otherwise, spots like Dhow Beach and Al Hapa attract customers and beach boys in the evening, so you can check out what they have to offer (Just make sure they don't rip you off)..

Had three days staying at the Langi Langi Beach House in Nungwe and thoroughly enjoyed it. You can go out for snorkelling or diving trips, lie on the beach, hang out at the beach bars or explore the nearby village. All very laid back and the food and the people at Langi Langi were top notch.Have a great trip!
