How to access my money while traveling

Hello all, im going to be backpacking through central america come new years, and i was wondering about the best way to carry money with me and access it. Due to chase banks terrible reviews for use abroad, ive been looking at the BBVA compass checking card. Anyone use this? Any other tips would help, thanks!

Do not carry lots of money, only what you need. Use ATMs and little more.

I was wondering more about the use of a debit card abroad, not how and how much cash to carry
