Um Phang from the south

Has anyone gone to Um Phang from the south? It doesn't really make sense to go all the way up to Mae Sot then 4+ hours back down to Um Phang. Is there any way to get directly to Uthai Thani from Um Phang? What about around and down to Kanchanaburi? I will be in the area in January if anyone is around.

Thanks

There are no decent roads which connect the two areas directly so you'd have to find a knowledgeable guide with a 4wd vehicle and it would take all day at least, and the local forestry police might have something to say about it ;-). It's very rugged and undeveloped territory, so unless you want to take on a difficult journey it's better to just go around via Mae Sot.

There's a guy here offering a 2-day offroad bike trip from Sangkhlaburi to Umphang:

I am thinking of going do to Poeng Kloeng near the end of my stay in the area so perhaps I would attempt to hire a guide/vehicle from there south to Sangkhlaburi. Permits might be a problem though. It looks fun and I don't like backtracking so going all the way back to Mae Sot would be a bummer.
