I've searched for (and found) a number of threads regarding this but there are still some cloudy details that I was hoping to get some clarification on...
A plane is too costly for me, nevermind that I'm scared to death of flying. I was looking to do this by bus. If I'm to understand, I need to do something along the lines of....
Day 1: Hanoi to Vinh
Day 2: Vinh to Phonsavan
Day 3: Phonsavan to Luang Prabang
Do I have this understood correctly? But the bus from Vinh to Phonsavan only runs every other day or so? Some threads say that there may be random overnight busses connecting one or two of these places but other threads are quick to caution that overnight busses here are rattling deathtraps that go bump in the night and are not so safe.

Hi Saltwatergem,If you dont mind travelling by bus, you can go overland into Luang Prabang via Dien Bien Phu: Hanoi - Son La - Dien Bien Phu (Vietnam) – Muangkua (Laos) – Muang Ngoi - Nong khiaw - Luang Prabang. It takes around 4-5 days to reach Laung Prabang. Expect some trekking if you love

#1This way would take a little too long, but I'll see how the connections size up

Are there any that go from Hanoi to Phonsavan or Luang Prabang? I'm going to end up in Vientiane eventually but it will be quite a slog to take that 24 hour monster trip and then go all the way up to Luang Prabang just to come back down to Vientiane to Thailand.
